Senegal's success in winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations presented a dramatic Story inseparable from the leadership of Sadio Mane at the most crucial moment. Amid the pressure and tension of the final, Mane made a decision contrary to his coach's instructions to keep the match sporting.

Senegal secured the championship title after defeating Morocco with a narrow 1-0 score in the final held at Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah on Sunday, January 18, 2026, local time, or early Monday morning WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The winning goal for the Lions of Teranga was scored in extra time, concluding a match full of drama and controversy.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Final was fiercely contested from the first minute. Both teams played disciplined and pressed each other until the match entered the final minutes of normal time. Tension peaked when Morocco was awarded a penalty after the referee ruled that El Hadji Diouf fouled Brahim Diaz.

The decision immediately triggered strong protests from the Senegal players. Coach Pape Thiaw even instructed his players to leave the pitch in protest against the referee's decision. The match was halted for about 10 minutes, and the situation was on the brink of chaos.

However, amidst this tension, Sadio Mane took on the role of peacemaker. The captain urged his teammates to return to the pitch and continue the match. Mane's stance became a turning point, not only for the course of the match but also for Senegal's history in the Africa Cup of Nations.

After the match resumed, Morocco still had the chance to take the penalty. However, Senegal was the fortunate side. Brahim Diaz failed to score as his panenka shot missed the target. The score remained 0-0 until the end of normal time, forcing the match into extra time.

In extra time, Senegal proved more effective. Pape Gueye emerged as the difference-maker with his goal in the 94th minute, which also secured the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title for Senegal.

After the match, Pape Gueye emphasized that his team's victory was achieved honorably.

"We gave everything, we didn't cheat," said Gueye.

"Honestly, it was a very difficult match."

"We were determined to win here, in this beautiful country, with incredible fans."

"Senegal are champions of Africa and we are very Happy," concluded the Villarreal midfielder.

A similar view was expressed by another Senegal midfielder, Idrissa Gueye, who believed his team's success was not without divine intervention.

"We wanted to stop the match because what happened was unacceptable," said the Everton star.

"However, Allah gave us this victory."

"Allah does not sleep and Allah sees everything," stated Gueye.

With this result, Senegal officially collected its second Africa Cup of Nations title in history. Previously, Sadio Mane and his teammates also became champions in the 2021 edition. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title further solidifies Senegal as one of the main powers in African Football in the last decade.
