The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 presented two contrasting stories. Senegal advanced with dominant performances, while Mali had to endure until the final seconds to secure their Quarter Final ticket. Both West African representatives confirmed their spots in the last eight after eliminating Sudan and Tunisia during matches spanning Saturday, January 3, 2026, to Sunday, January 4, 2026 WIB.

Senegal became the first team to reach the quarter finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Sudan 3-1 at Grande Stade Tangier. This victory proved particularly special as it came through a swift response and mental resurgence after initially trailing.

Sudan opened the match with a surprise. In the sixth minute, Aamir Abdallah breached Senegal's defensive line, cut inside, and unleashed a curling left-footed shot beyond goalkeeper Edouard Mendy's reach. This early goal temporarily shifted the match dynamics.

Trailing by a goal, Senegal intensified their play. Ball possession dominance emerged, spearheaded by Sadio Mané's aggressive pressing from midfield. This pressure yielded an equalizer in the 24th minute when Mané dispossessed an opponent and immediately fed Pape Guèye, who finished with a precise strike into the corner.

Senegal maintained pressure until halftime. Just before the break, Guèye again proved decisive. Starting with Ismaila Sarr's wing movement, the ball reached Nicolas Jackson before being laid off into the penalty area, where Guèye met it with a measured shot to give Senegal a 2-1 halftime lead.

Entering the second half, Senegal played more calmly and disciplined. The final goal came in the 77th minute through 17-year-old substitute Ibrahima Mbaye. Capitalizing on Mané's assist, Mbaye became one of the youngest scorers in Africa Cup of Nations history while sealing Les Lions de la Teranga's 3-1 victory.

In another match, Mali navigated a far more difficult path. They reached the quarter finals by eliminating Tunisia 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 Draw through extra time in Casablanca.

Mali faced adversity from the 26th minute when Woyo Coulibaly received a red card for stamping on Hannibal Mejbri's ankle, forcing them to play with ten men. Under these circumstances, Mali opted for compact defending and counter-attacks.

Tunisia finally broke the deadlock in the 88th minute when Firas Chaouat headed home Elias Saad's cross, appearing to secure victory. However, drama unfolded during Injury time.

Mali earned a penalty after Yassine Meriah handled the ball in the box. Lassine Sinayoko converted perfectly in the 97th minute, forcing extra time.

Tunisia had a goal disallowed for offside in extra time, sending the match to penalties. Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra shone decisively with two crucial saves to secure his team's progression.

Remarkably, Mali reached the quarter finals without a single regulation-time win in the tournament. They only recorded Draws in the group stage and against Tunisia before advancing via penalties.

This outcome sets up a heated West African quarter final derby. Senegal and Mali will face off in Tangier on Friday, January 9, 2026. As 2021 AFCON champions and Africa's second-ranked team, Senegal will confront Mali's renowned resilience, discipline, and ability to withstand pressure.
