Senegal National Team secured their position as champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating the Morocco National Team with a narrow 1-0 score in the final match held at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat, on Sunday, January 18, 2026, local time. The tense and closely contested match was ultimately decided by a goal in extra time.
The decisive winning goal for Senegal was scored by Pape Gueye in the 94th minute of the first extra period. The disciplined midfielder capitalized on a swift counter-attack to silence the home crowd, securing Les Lions de la Teranga's place on the champions' podium.
This title marks Senegal's second Africa Cup trophy in history. Previously, Sadio Mane and teammates achieved the same feat in the 2021 edition, ironically also hosted in Morocco. Senegal's consistency in the last two editions solidifies their status as a dominant force in African Football today.

Conversely, this defeat prolongs Morocco's long wait to reclaim the Africa Cup title. The Atlas Lions last lifted the trophy in the 1976 edition held in Ethiopia. Playing on home soil, Morocco once again faced disappointment before their supporters.
From kickoff, Senegal played aggressively, immediately taking the initiative. The first chance came through a Pape Gueye header, saved by Morocco's Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Pressure continued via Iliman Ndiaye, forcing Bounou into another crucial save.
Morocco responded actively. Despite being under pressure in the first half, they maintained defensive discipline. The score remained 0-0 at halftime, though Senegal created more threatening opportunities.
In the second half, Morocco grew bolder. Ayoub El Kaabi fired a shot narrowly wide, while Abde Ezzalzouli's attempt sailed over the bar. Match intensity escalated as both teams played disciplined yet aggressive Football.
Drama unfolded near the end of regular time. Senegal had a goal disallowed for a prior foul. Minutes later, Morocco earned a penalty after VAR confirmed Brahim Diaz was fouled in the box during the 90+8th minute.
The decision triggered fierce protests from Senegal. Play halted for several minutes as Senegalese players left the pitch in protest. When play resumed, Diaz took the penalty, but Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy made a crucial save.
The missed penalty became the match's turning point. In extra time, Senegal played more effectively and patiently. In the 94th minute, Gueye converted a rapid counter-attack to put Senegal ahead 1-0.
Morocco intensified their attacks during the remaining extra time, but Senegal's solid defense and Mendy's heroic goalkeeping thwarted all efforts. The 1-0 scoreline held until the final whistle, securing Senegal's victory.
