Interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick chose to remain calm after guiding his team to victory over Manchester City in the Premier League fixture. Despite the prestigious nature of the win, Carrick stressed he didn't want to get carried away by momentary euphoria.

According to Carrick, the positive result against their city rivals must serve as a benchmark for the team's performance, not just a one-off achievement.

"I'm not getting carried away. It's only one result, but this feeling needs to become a regular thing with that level of performance," said Carrick, quoted by Sky Sports after the match on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Manchester United delivered a solid performance hosting Manchester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League's 22nd week. The Red Devils secured a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo in the 65th minute and Patrick Dorgu eleven minutes later.

The result not only secured three crucial points but also brought Manchester United closer to Liverpool in fourth place in the Standings, trailing by just one point. Furthermore, this victory extended Carrick's positive record since taking charge as interim manager, as he remains undefeated.

Carrick acknowledged the win over City held special meaning, especially given the very limited preparation time. However, he emphasized that the team's main focus now is maintaining consistency in their performances in the upcoming matches.

"Today was special. We put everything together quickly and tried to influence the team. There's a strong emotional bond between the staff and players regarding what we want to do," he explained.

Furthermore, the former England midfielder believed the squad's readiness was a key factor in subduing Manchester City's play. According to Carrick, the players' physical and mental condition was at the right level to face such a high-intensity big game.

He also gave special appreciation to the Manchester United players' attitude, which he felt showed a strong desire to keep developing under his guidance.

"The players were fantastic. You never really know how a game will go, but they showed incredible readiness," stated Carrick.

Carrick added that the game plan worked effectively because every player understood their role and responsibility on the pitch. Tactical discipline and collective commitment were the main foundations of the victory over Manchester City.

"They want to learn, they're enthusiastic, and they really want it. We had a plan to achieve certain things and every player carried out their job superbly," Carrick concluded.
