For Indonesian tourists, Japan is not merely a destination but a landscape of experiences blending futuristic cities, ancient traditions, iconic cuisine, and four-season nature. Among the 47 prefectures from Hokkaido to Okinawa, several cities consistently remain major magnets.

"So those are still favorites, and unfortunately, they are favorites for everyone, not just Indonesians; Westerners like them too," he said.

The popularity of these cities is driven by ease of accessibility, Tourism infrastructure, and diverse attractions. From Tokyo's futuristic shopping districts, Osaka's street food paradise, to Sapporo's winter scenery in Hokkaido.
Beyond these three main cities, Indonesian tourists' interest is also turning to other equally appealing destinations: Chiba, Kyoto, and Fukuoka.
Cities with cultural and historical allure like Kyoto hold strong appeal for international tourists.
However, this popularity also brings consequences.
"But it's crowded there, queues everywhere, even though there's still so much more to explore," said Benny.
The density of tourists in iconic cities is slowly encouraging Indonesian tourists to start looking at Alternative Destinations off the main path.
According to Benny, Indonesian tourists tend to prefer diverse and fresh experiences. Tohoku, a region in northern Japan, is beginning to capture attention.
Akita and Aomori prefectures in Tohoku offer beautiful natural scenery and various captivating festivals.
Japan's appeal lies not only in its destinations but also in its safety and ease of Travel.
The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) recorded that the number of Indonesian tourists visiting Japan from January to November 2025 reached 558,900 people. This figure represents a 26.3 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year.
Globally, Japan's appeal is strengthening even further. A Dentsu Inc. survey showed Japan is the destination global tourists most want to revisit, particularly due to the strength of its cuisine and product quality.
In an online poll involving respondents from 20 countries, Japan ranked first with 52.7 percent, followed by South Korea (20.0 percent) and the United States (16.6 percent).(ANTARA)
