Newcastle United and Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan has been diagnosed with cancer and will undergo treatment. The news immediately shook English Football and the world, considering Keegan's immense influence as a player, manager, and cross-generational icon.

The former England manager and striker for The Three Lions previously experienced abdominal issues and was hospitalized for a series of examinations. These tests revealed cancer of an unspecified type.

“Kevin Keegan was recently admitted to hospital for further evaluation of abdominal symptoms he was experiencing. These investigations revealed a cancer diagnosis, and Kevin will now undergo treatment,” an official family statement cited by The Athletic said.

“Kevin is thankful for the ongoing medical care and treatment he continues to receive. The family request privacy during this difficult time and will be making no further comment.”

A wave of support poured in, especially from Newcastle United, the club most closely associated with Keegan's name, both as a player and manager. The Magpies conveyed prayers and solidarity through an official statement.

“Our former player and manager Kevin Keegan is to undergo treatment after being diagnosed with cancer following his admission to hospital for further evaluation of abdominal symptoms he was experiencing,” Newcastle wrote in an official statement.

“King Kev. We’re with you every step of the way. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery.”

Keegan is a central figure in English football history. He won three English First Division titles with Liverpool in the 1970s, and twice won the Ballon d’Or as the world's best player while playing for German club Hamburg.

With the England National Team, Keegan scored 21 goals in 63 appearances. He served as England captain and manager between 1999 and 2000.

Keegan began his professional career at Scunthorpe United and made nearly 600 league appearances for six different clubs. He also played for Southampton and Australia's Blacktown City, showcasing a cross-continental career path rare for English players of his era.

After retiring as a player, Keegan almost led Newcastle to the English league title in the 1995/1996 season during his first managerial role. He had previously saved the club from relegation to the third division and brought them back to the top flight.

After securing promotion again with Fulham, Keegan was appointed England Manager, but resigned in October 2000 following a defeat in 2006 World Cup Qualifying

He then managed Manchester City for four years, before returning to Newcastle in 2008.

Now, Kevin Keegan faces his toughest battle off the pitch. English football and the world hope King Kev wins against the illness he is facing.
