In the world of Badminton, staying at the top proves to be the toughest challenge. This is because the Badminton World Federation (BWF) updates rankings every week, meaning the world number one status can change anytime. Yet only a few players manage to maintain their top position long-term.
Here is a list of badminton players who have held the BWF world number one ranking for the longest durations:
Lee Chong Wei (10 years 338 days)

This Malaysian player holds the record for the longest reign as world number one, totaling 10 years 338 days.
As a singles player, Lee maintained the top position for 199 consecutive weeks from August 21, 2008 to June 14, 2012.
On May 2, 2023, Lee was inducted into the BWF Badminton Hall of Fame, widely recognized as one of the greatest badminton players of all time.
Lin Dan (10 years 30 days)
Lin Dan ranks second with 10 years 30 days as world number one.
During his career, Lin made history as the first men's singles player to defend his Olympic Gold Medal at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
For these achievements, Lin Dan entered the BWF Badminton Hall of Fame on May 26, 2023.
Peter Hoeg Gade (8 years 237 days)
Next is Denmark's Peter Hoeg Gade, who stayed at the summit for 8 years 237 days. He held the world number one ranking between 1998 and 2001.
With 22 Grand Prix titles, he ranks among badminton's most successful players.
Zhang Ning (8 years 214 days)
Zhang Ning follows with 8 years 214 days as world number one.
This Chinese player was renowned for her precise, deceptive playstyle that forced opponents to cover all corners of the court.
She won the 2003 World Championship and collected five medals total from the event.

She represented both Indonesia and later the Netherlands in international competitions.
Audina rose to prominence after appearing in Indonesia's Uber Cup team and defeating China in the 1994 final. In October 1993, she also briefly held the world number one ranking in Women's Singles.
She helped defend the Uber Cup title in 1996 and 1998 before relocating to the Netherlands with her husband in 2000.
