New coach of the Indonesian National Team, John Herdman, believes Indonesian football has a highly promising talent foundation. This perspective stems from his experience building the Canadian national team for over five years until their successful qualification for the World Cup 2022.
John Herdman was officially appointed by PSSI as head coach of the Indonesian National Team on Saturday, with a two-year contract duration and an option for a two-year extension. This appointment also marks the start of a mid-term project expected to elevate Indonesia's standing on the international stage.
"What I see is that the talent pool exists. It feels very similar to Canada. A large country, huge potential with local players, but also the ability to recruit dual-nationality players – and they've already begun that journey," Herdman told Canadian media The Canadian Press on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

For Herdman, the similarity between Indonesia and Canada extends beyond large populations to player development dynamics. He sees Indonesia possessing an exciting combination of local talent and Diaspora Players that could enrich the national team's quality if managed properly and sustainably.
The English coach is known as a transformational figure. During his tenure with Canada, he successfully elevated their FIFA world ranking from 94th to 33rd. This track record has generated high expectations for his arrival in Indonesia.
Beyond player potential, another factor attracting Herdman to Indonesia is the supporters' atmosphere and militancy. He believes public support is a crucial element in building a competitive national team.
"It's about finding the right project, one where you can feel the passion and intensity of the fans," said Herdman, who last coached MLS club Toronto FC before resigning in November 2024.
The 50-year-old coach is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia next week for his official introductory press conference. Afterwards, he will immediately face a packed schedule with the national team.
Herdman's first assignment begins at the Fifa Series tournament held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium during the FIFA Match Day period of March 23–31, 2026. This tournament will serve as the initial platform to introduce his gameplay philosophy and tactical approach to the Garuda squad.
Following the FIFA Series, Herdman will continue leading Indonesia through FIFA Match Days in June, September, October, and November. Additionally, the 2026 AFF Cup starting July 25, 2026, is another key benchmark event for his project.
Beyond the senior team, Herdman will also coach Indonesia's U23 national team. He considers direct involvement at youth levels vital for comprehensively understanding the nation's football culture.
"Because I think it's certainly an important part of learning the culture, truly immersing yourself. You really have to understand the people and their ways to create that connection," said Herdman, who also successfully guided Canada's women's national team to the 2007 and 2011 World Cups.
With cross-level and cross-Cultural Experience, Herdman is expected to bridge the gap between the enormous potential of Indonesian Football and tangible international achievements.
