Rory McIlroy reaffirmed his status as one of golf's greatest modern players after being selected as the 2025 Association of Golf Writers (AGW) Trophy winner. He will receive the award in July 2026 at Royal Birkdale.
This marks McIlroy's sixth time winning the prestigious trophy, a record increasingly difficult for other golfers to match.
The AGW Trophy is awarded annually to the golfer or team deemed to have made the most outstanding contribution to golf in the preceding 12 months. 2025 indeed felt like a "level up" chapter in McIlroy's career.

The Northern Irish golfer achieved his most monumental milestone by winning the Masters Tournament, making him the first European male golfer to complete the Career Grand Slam of all four PGA TOUR majors.
He joined the super-elite list containing only five other players in history.
Not stopping there, McIlroy also claimed his seventh Race to Dubai title, surpassing the achievement of legend Severiano Ballesteros. He now trails only one behind Colin Montgomerie's all-time record.
In September, McIlroy was part of the European team that won the Ryder Cup at Bethpage. This victory cemented his leadership in golf's most prestigious team competition.
At the individual tournament level, he won his second Amgen Irish Open title, along with PGA TOUR victories at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and THE PLAYERS Championship.
"I'm deeply honored to win the 2025 Association of Golf Writers Trophy. This has been an incredibly special year for me and my family, particularly after winning the Masters to become Europe's first Career Grand Slam player, capturing the Irish Open, being part of the Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage under Captain Luke Donald, and winning the Harry Vardon Trophy for the seventh time," McIlroy stated.
AGW Chairman Philip Reid affirmed McIlroy's win was thoroughly deserved.
"On behalf of the Association of Golf Writers, I congratulate Rory on a truly extraordinary year and on winning our trophy for a sixth time. He enhanced his legacy as Europe's first male Career Grand Slam winner after his Masters victory in April – a phenomenal achievement – alongside other accomplishments in this spectacular year," Reid said.
In the AGW poll, the winning European Ryder Cup team placed second, with Tommy Fleetwood finishing third.
With these achievements, McIlroy didn't just add another trophy but emphatically confirmed that 2025 was the year he rewrote history.
