The Indonesian golf team enters a crucial phase towards the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. After a full year of national training and a series of Asian tryouts, the seven best golfers were finally selected to hoist the Red and White in Bangkok.

Indonesian national golf coach Alga Topan emphasized that the squad, consisting of four male and three female players, is not the result of an instant selection.

They were born from a long screening process that tested mental strength, technique, and course management skills.

“We have been preparing independently for the past year, and then in this last month we underwent intensive training,” Alga told Antara.

Strict Selection from 10 Names to 7 Mainstays

The Executive Board of the Indonesian Golf Association (PB PGI) previously called 10 athletes to undergo the main selection.

From the men's sector: Randy Arbenata Bintang, Kenneth Henson Sutianto, Rayhan Abdul Latief, Asa Bakthi, and Amadeus Christian Susanto.

From the women's sector: Bianca Naomi Laksono, Thea Jessica Tan, Elaine Widjaja, Rayi Geulis, and Sania Talita Wahyudi.

Through a comprehensive evaluation covering technical tests, physical, and course management, the seven best athletes were selected to represent Indonesia.

“We prepared the national training camp at 150 percent capacity. This is part of the coaching we did until the final stage to choose the best,” said Alga.

Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia Still Favorites

Entering the final preparation phase, Indonesia does not close its eyes to the strength of the opponents. Alga mentioned that host Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia are still the main competitors.

The target of two golds from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) makes the competition even more exciting. Alga considers that target to be realistic.

“That target is natural because in the last few SEA Games we lost in the final and ended up with silver,” he said.

At the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, Indonesia brought home one silver from the women's team (Elaine Widjaja/Holly Victoria Halim) and one bronze from the men's team (Amadeus, Rayhan, Randy, and Jonathan Xavier Hartono).

In an effort to avoid technical surprises on the field, the Indonesian team departed early for Thailand. This was done because the competition field will be closed three days before official training begins.

“We know the host might have their own strategy, and that's natural. What's important is that we anticipate it with optimal preparation,” he concluded.

The golf event at the 2025 SEA Games Thailand will take place from December 11 to 14.
