One of Indonesia's badminton icons, Jonatan Christie has a goal for when he is no longer actively competing. This mainstay athlete of the Red and White wants to build a badminton academy specifically for the singles sector.
During an interview session at Daddies Arena, South Tangerang, Jonatan stated this plan has long been in his thoughts.
His inspiration comes from Marcus Fernaldi Gideon's academy model, which he considers to have a modern training system and complete facilities.

“Yes, that's one of my dreams. Meaning one of my aspirations is to have an academy like Gideon's proper setup. Where athletes have dormitories, and there are truly dedicated specialized coaches,” said Jonatan.
As a men's singles player, Jonatan wants his academy to focus on developing the singles sector that has shaped his world-level career. He emphasizes the importance of direct involvement in young athletes' development process.
Therefore, Jojo hopes the facility can be built as close as possible to his residence.
“Ideally, the location would be near my home so I can be directly involved. Because if it's far, it would be regrettable not to participate. Some existing academies just carry names without actual involvement, which is unfortunate for the academy itself,” he hoped.
Jonatan wants to provide opportunities for talented children with high motivation but constrained by costs.
The plan is to open doors for potential talents lacking access to proper training.
According to him, the academy aims not only to produce champions but to create pathways for those untouched by adequate facilities.
Regarding timeline, Jojo hopes this project materializes before he hangs up his racket. However, land availability poses a major challenge.
“Ideally before retirement, but finding land is difficult. If private parties want to cooperate, I wouldn't refuse. Meaning I'm open to partnerships,” he expressed.
He mentioned networks built off-court, including private sector partners—can be crucial access points to realize his dream academy.
“That's why I'm gathering many connections outside (the national training center) now, so after retiring from badminton, there are other endeavors to pursue. I genuinely hope it works out,” he concluded.(Antara)
