Impressive Achievements of Timur Kapadze, Can They Be Capital to Build a Competitive Indonesian National Team?

The name Timur Kapadze, the coach from Uzbekistan, has resurfaced as the leading candidate to fill the Indonesian National Team coaching position. Rumors intensified after Kapadze arrived in Jakarta on November 21, 2025, reportedly to undergo an interview. 

This 44-year-old figure is no ordinary tactician; his coaching track record shows a combination of quick achievements and long-term vision – qualities highly sought by PSSI in efforts to elevate the national team's performance to a more competitive level.

PSSI itself remains cautious regarding these rumors. 

"Indeed, several names have been circulating, but until now, we in the PSSI Executive Committee have not received any information," stated PSSI Vice Chairman, Zainudin Amali. 

"If there is information, we will certainly announce it," he added.

Brilliant Achievements in a Short Time

Although relatively young as a coach, Kapadze has managed to record several impressive achievements in a short period:

1. Qualified for the 2026 World Cup

Appointed head coach of Uzbekistan in January 2025, Kapadze reached a historic milestone within just eight months. He led Uzbekistan to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, the first time the nation has reached the final round of football's biggest tournament.

With this qualification, Kapadze carved out an achievement never reached by his predecessors in several previous attempts.

2. Won the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup
   
Under Kapadze's guidance, Uzbekistan defeated Iran 1–0 in the final to win the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup. 

3. Success with the Youth Generation

Before handling the senior team, Kapadze nurtured the Uzbekistan U-23 team with impressive results, leading them to finish as runners-up in the U-23 Asian Cup in two consecutive editions (2022 and 2024). 

4. Individual Recognition

Kapadze's achievements were also recognized personally. He won the title of Uzbekistan's Best Coach twice, in 2022 and 2024.

Balance Between Ambition and Player Rapport

One aspect that makes Kapadze stand out is his ability to build a solid team with a winning mentality. During his time as Uzbekistan coach in 2025, his team never lost in eight matches, recording 5 wins and 3 draws. 

Other statistics show high effectiveness, averaging 2.25 points per match during that period. 

Kapadze is also known for his trust in young players and his flexible tactical approach. This combination allows him to create a positive and progressive team atmosphere, something that could be highly beneficial if he indeed comes to Indonesia, where the potential of young talent is immense.

Challenges and Risks for PSSI

Although his reputation is strong, there are several risks if PSSI contracts Kapadze.

After leading Uzbekistan to the World Cup, Kapadze was briefly demoted to assistant coach when Fabio Cannavaro was appointed head coach. Kapadze subsequently resigned, stating he wanted to continue his career as a head coach. 

Although Kapadze has nurtured young players, transitioning to an international squad like the Indonesian National Team is certainly different. There are challenges of adapting tactics and the local football culture.

Attracting a foreign coach with international achievements will increase the pressure for instant performance. PSSI must be ready for high expectations from supporters.

Is Kapadze PSSI's Answer?

If PSSI does recruit Kapadze, it could be an ambitious signal to bring in a coach proven capable of making history for another country in order to create a real transformation for the Indonesian National Team. Kapadze offers a combination of long-term vision and the capacity to win at a high level, two qualities crucial for building a new era for the national team.

With his proven career in Uzbekistan and brilliant achievements in a short time, Kapadze could be the catalyst for the revival of the Indonesian National Team. However, this decision is not without risk, and PSSI must consider it carefully so that Kapadze's great potential can truly be realized for the Red and White.
