Indonesia U-20 national team coach, Nova Arianto, stated his big ambition to lead Garuda Muda to follow in the footsteps of the U-17 team he once managed, which qualified for the World Cup. That mission isn't new for Nova, who proved his capability by guiding the U-17 national team to the 2025 Qatar U-17 World Cup through impressive performances in the U-17 Asian Cup.
Now, the challenge he faces is different. Nova has just started working with the U-20 age group. He still needs to understand the character and quality of many players in this squad.
However, he remains optimistic because he has about six months to build a competitive team before entering the crucial phase.

Target: U-20 Asian Cup and Reaching the Semifinals
The 2027 U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan is the ultimate goal. To get there, Indonesia must first qualify for the 2027 U-20 Asian Cup and reach the semifinals to secure an automatic ticket to the World Cup.
That's not an easy process, but Nova is accustomed to handling high pressure. With experience leading teams in two major age-category tournaments, his working pattern and preparation are now being directed to ensure Indonesia doesn't just participate, but competes at the Asian level.
Player Selection and Integration of U-17 Alumni
Nova's immediate program is holding U-20 player selections. He admits unfamiliarity with most players in this age group. Therefore, talent identification is the top priority in the coming weeks.
The best players from selections will be combined with U-17 national team alumni who recently competed in the 2025 U-17 World Cup.
PSSI stated this group will form the majority of the U-20 squad, giving Nova a more solid foundation since he already understands their character and abilities.
The first selection is scheduled for December 2, coordinated with other coaching staff including Alex, to find players matching the tactical philosophy to be implemented ahead of the 2027 U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers.
Continuing the U-17 Team's Positive Energy
The U-17 team's positive results serve as both reference and motivation. Nova wants to repeat the same working pattern with long-term preparation and a clear roadmap. He will soon propose this to PSSI as the foundation for work leading to early 2026.
With federation support, structured player regeneration, and elite youth football experience, Nova hopes the U-20 national team can replicate the previous generation's achievements.
