The 2026 World Cup European Qualifiers from Saturday night to early Sunday WIB once again delivered the drama and tension characteristic of European football. Ten matches from Groups B, C, H, E, and J not only provided exciting goals but also introduced new uncertainty for the favored teams who had to postpone their qualification celebrations.
Although many big teams arrived as favorites, some still have to hold their breath until the final matchday. Amidst a packed schedule and the pressure for consistent performances, several nations stumbled and lost momentum.
According to UEFA, this edition's group phase indeed feels tighter. The new 48-team format for the 2026 World Cup increased Europe's allocation to 16 slots, but the competition remains fierce as the quality between nations is increasingly balanced.

Spain Still Dominant, But Turkey Lurks
Spain showed their class against Georgia at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena. La Roja delivered a fierce performance and returned with a 4-0 victory, a result that seemed to cement their dominance in Group E.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice in a brilliant performance. Martin Zubimendi and Ferran Torres also added to the scoreboard. This win extended Spain's streak to five consecutive victories, scoring 15 goals without conceding any. That record stands as one of the best in the entire European zone.
However, the party couldn't start just yet. Turkey, in second place, also secured an important 2-0 win over Bulgaria. With only a three-point gap, the automatic qualification spot will be decided on the final matchday. Mathematically, Turkey still has a chance to overtake Spain if the final results swing in their favor.
UEFA data shows Spain now has one of the highest expected goals in the qualifiers, while Turkey ranks among the top five teams for average shots. Given this, the final match promises to be a tactical duel full of calculation.
Belgium Stumble Again, Kazakhstan Becomes Stumbling Block
In Group J, Belgium endured a complicated evening. Visiting Kazakhstan, The Red Devils could only manage a 1-1 draw. The hosts took an early lead through Dastan Satpayev in the 9th minute, before Hans Vanaken equalized early in the second half.
Kazakhstan lost Islam Chesnokov to a red card in the 79th minute, but Belgium failed to capitalize. Their usually effective frontline looked blunt. Despite FIFA data indicating Belgium has one of the highest possession rates in the European qualifiers.
Due to this result, Belgium couldn't secure automatic qualification and must win against Liechtenstein in their final match. On paper, Belgium is far superior. However, Hansi Flick certainly won't want his squad to squander another opportunity.
Swiss Win Big, But Not Safe Yet
Switzerland continued their positive trend in Group B with a commanding 4-1 win over Sweden. Their performance was quite promising, particularly in building attacks from the wings, which is their main strength.
A problem arose after Kosovo defeated Slovenia 2-0. That victory means Switzerland cannot yet confirm their World Cup spot. They lead Kosovo by three points, and the two teams will face each other directly in the decisive match.
This match is predicted to be intense, as both nations have contrasting playing styles. Switzerland is strong in game organization, while Kosovo excels at quick and effective transitions. According to Opta, Kosovo is among the teams with the best shot accuracy in the qualifiers so far.
Austria Also Can't Celebrate Ticket Yet
A similar situation unfolded in Group H. Austria won 2-0 against Cyprus, but Bosnia & Herzegovina also secured a 3-1 victory over Romania. Austria now has 18 points but could mathematically still be caught by Bosnia.
In the last three qualifying editions, Austria has been known as a team consistently strong in the group phase but often falters at crucial moments. Coach Ralf Rangnick emphasized that the final match is one where they cannot afford a single mistake, especially with Bosnia's form on the rise.
