Not all flights are created equal. Some simply transport passengers from point A to point B, but others offer stunning visual experiences. From majestic waterfalls to crystal blue lakes,

Perhaps only a few flight routes in the world offer captivating natural scenery, even with rainbows appearing from behind the clouds.

Citing a report from Travel + Leisure, passengers on these routes have the chance to witness natural phenomena rarely seen from the ground. It's no wonder many travelers add them to their aviation bucket list.

Rainbows from the Air: Luck Above Niagara Falls

One route considered particularly fortunate is the journey from Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

Wingbits, a flight tracking company, calls this route special because its path crosses Niagara Falls, one of the world's most famous natural icons.

Every second, over 3,100 tons of water flow with spectacular force. Sunlight reflecting off the spray often creates rainbows arching right beneath the aircraft. This sight is like a living painting that moves with the speed of the plane.

This phenomenon is also backed by scientific explanation.

"These special flight routes truly span various parts of the world, from the sweltering rainforests of South America to the icy fjords of Norway," said Dr. Elizabeth Austin, an atmospheric physicist.

She added that the rainbow phenomenon isn't just about beauty. For some pilots and passengers, flying through a rainbow is considered to bring luck and positive energy for the journey.

Meanwhile, for other travelers, seeing a rainbow from altitude is not only a rare moment but also one of the best travel memories.

Crossing Lake Karersee: A Blue Gem in the Dolomites

It's not only North America offering "lucky routes." Europe also has equally amazing air paths.

Three flights crossing the Alpine Lake Karersee in the Dolomites, Italy, made the list. This lake is famous for its clear water and the light shimmer reflected off its surface.

After a brief rain, rainbows often appear and reflect on the lake, providing natural scenery resembling a fantasy film setting.

The three routes on the list are London Heathrow (LHR) – Dubrovnik (DBV), München (MUC) – Palma de Mallorca (PMI) and Frankfurt (FRA) – Rome FCO (FCO).

If lucky, passengers can see pastel skies, Dolomite cliffs, and rainbows seemingly floating on the water's surface. All this can be enjoyed from one small airplane window.

Rainbows in Owens Valley: Desert, Mountains, and Sky Phenomena

Four flight routes in the United States are also on the list of luckiest routes, especially those crossing Owens Valley, California.

This high desert valley is flanked by the majestic panoramas of the Sierra Nevada and White Mountains.

In summer, thunderstorms followed by clear skies often create rainbows stretching across the valley floor. This becomes a dramatic sight rarely noticed by many travelers.

These routes include Phoenix (PHX) - San Francisco (SFO), Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) - Fresno Yosemite (FAT), San Jose (SJC) - Las Vegas (LAS) and San Francisco (SFO) - Las Vegas (LAS).

Each offers a unique perspective of the American West wilderness.

Iguazu Falls, Isle of Skye, and El Capitan: Other Views from the Sky

Several other "lucky" routes are scattered across various continents:

Foz do Iguaçu - São Paulo (Brazil).

Flying right over Iguazu Falls, which forms a giant wall of water amidst the tropical rainforest.

London Gatwick (LGW) - Keflavík (KEF)

Planes pass over the Isle of Skye in Scotland, home to high cliffs and dramatic highland scenery.

Phnom Penh (PNH) - Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG)

This route features views of Huangguoshu Waterfall, one of Asia's largest waterfalls.

Houston (IAH) - San Francisco (SFO)

Passengers can see El Capitan, a giant granite wall nearly 1 km high in Yosemite.

Travel is No Longer Just Transit

These routes remind us that air travel can be more than just transportation. The airplane window sometimes becomes a canvas where nature displays its most beautiful surprises – majestic waterfalls, sparkling lakes, and fleeting rainbows that leave a lasting impression.

For travelers wanting to experience that magic, choosing flight routes with beautiful scenery can be a simple way to add a wow factor to a journey.
