The NBA All-Star event has always been the most anticipated annual basketball celebration for fans worldwide. However, after several years being criticized for losing its competitive edge, the NBA has finally introduced a new format called "US vs The World," a concept promising fierce battles between American players and the best international stars.

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) officially announced this major change on Tuesday night local time.

The 2026 All-Star Game will be held on February 15, 2026, at the Intuit Dome, home of the Los Angeles Clippers in Inglewood, California, starting at 5 PM local time or Monday morning Indonesian time.

This "US vs The World" format marks a significant step after months of searching for ways to restore the appeal of the All-Star Game, which had faded.

No longer just about entertainment, the NBA wants to bring back a sense of pride and national spirit to the court.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver explained that choosing this format aligns with the heightened national spirit seen during the Olympics.

"That momentum is believed to enhance the appeal for the global audience, which has long formed a large part of the NBA fan base," he said.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Welcomes the Change

One of the players most enthusiastic about this change is Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Milwaukee Bucks star believes this new format will make the game more competitive and exciting to watch.

"I will play hard. All players have egos; no one wants to be embarrassed. So people will play more seriously because they don’t want to become the subject of viral memes. I love this format," said Antetokounmpo as quoted from the NBA's official website.

Giannis's comments reflect the high hopes of many players and fans that this game won't just be a dunk and three-point shooting showcase, but also a battle of continental prestige.

More Dynamic Competition Format

Under this new system, there will be three teams consisting of at least eight players each. Each game will last one quarter (12 minutes).

Team A faces Team B in the first game, the winner plays Team C in the second game, and the loser from the first game meets Team C in the third game.

The two teams with the best records will meet in the final. If all teams are tied, point differential will be the tiebreaker.

Additionally, the NBA has also eliminated the frontcourt and backcourt player categories in voting.

This means a player's position is no longer a determining factor—only performance and popularity decide.

The player selection system still uses a combination of votes: fans (50 percent), players (25 percent), and media/broadcasters (25 percent).

The top 10 players (five from the East and five from the West) will be starters, while the other 14 players are selected by NBA head coaches.

From this total of 24 players, two United States teams and one World team will be formed.

Rise of International Players as the Catalyst

It's no secret that in recent seasons, non-American players have increasingly dominated the NBA.

They have won the last seven MVP awards, four scoring titles, and five consecutive rebounding titles.

Last season, Canadian star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander even won the Finals MVP award while leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA championship.

This reality makes the "US vs The World" concept feel increasingly relevant, serving as an official stage to show basketball is no longer solely America's domain.

Hopes to Reignite All-Star Excitement

The NBA certainly hopes this new format can restore the competitive spirit that had been missing.

For instance, the 2024 All-Star Game in Indianapolis was criticized by many for its excessively high final score, 211–186, seen more as a relaxed practice session than a serious contest.

With national pride and global prestige now at stake, the 2026 All-Star Game has the potential to be one of the most exciting in history. The world is ready to challenge America, and this time, everyone will play for real. (Antara)
