Indonesia Has Great Potential to Develop Yacht Tourism, Here Are the Strategies

Indonesia holds enormous potential to develop yacht tourism as a new growth driver for its marine tourism sector. As the world's largest archipelagic nation located within the biodiverse Coral Triangle region, Indonesia is well positioned to build a fully functional yacht tourism ecosystem.

The Ministry of Tourism is advancing the development of yacht tourism to strengthen the national marine tourism ecosystem while improving the global competitiveness of Indonesia's tourism industry.

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana confirmed that yacht tourism is one of three core pillars for developing premium quality marine tourism in Indonesia, alongside cruise tourism and diving tourism.

"Yacht tourism forms part of our three main pillars for premium marine tourism development, together with cruise and diving tourism," Widiyanti stated during the 2026 INSA Yacht Festival (IYF) held in Bali.

According to Widiyanti, Indonesia's unique geographical advantage is a critical foundational asset for developing this small luxury cruise tourism segment. Thousands of islands, extensive coastlines, and rich marine ecosystems offer vast opportunity to deliver one-of-a-kind travel experiences.

However, this potential cannot be realised without a complete supporting ecosystem. Developing yacht tourism does not only rely on tourist destinations: it also requires properly equipped marinas, navigation infrastructure, shipyards, hospitality services, and active meaningful participation from local coastal communities.

For this reason, the Ministry of Tourism is encouraging cross-sector collaboration between industry operators, investors, community groups, government authorities, and all tourism stakeholders.

"We hope this collaboration will deliver wide-reaching positive impacts: from increasing tourist arrivals, growing the maritime, marina and shipbuilding industries, supporting small and medium enterprises, right through to opening new economic opportunities for coastal communities," she explained.

Yacht Tourism Unlocks Broad Economic Opportunities

Development of yacht tourism is projected not only to boost tourist visitor numbers, but also to generate positive multiplier effects across multiple economic sectors.

Carmelita Hartoto, General Chair of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian National Shipowners Association (INSA), stated that marine tourism development must be maximised through coordinated collaboration between central and regional governments, business operators, industry associations, and all relevant stakeholders.

Carmelita noted that marine tourism carries high strategic value, as its benefits extend across the shipping, marina, and shipbuilding industries, support local small and medium enterprises, and reach ordinary residents living in coastal areas.

"Through the INSA Yacht Festival, we aim to support the development of quality tourism in Indonesia via the range of activities being hosted, while also providing a dedicated collaborative space for all stakeholders to build a world-class marine tourism industry," Carmelita stated.

Yacht Tourism Is More Than Just Sailing

Nova Y. Mugijanto, Deputy General Chair of INSA Central Executive Board and Chairman of the 2026 IYF Organising Committee, explained that this year's festival is built around three core themes: Wellness Tourism, Marine Tourism, and Gastronomy.

This concept reflects how yacht tourism has evolved into an integral part of modern marine lifestyle. The sailing experience can now be seamlessly combined with wellness activities, sports, recreation, cultural immersion, and local culinary experiences.

Over its three day run, the 2026 INSA Yacht Festival will host a full programme of activities including yacht exhibitions, educational tours, public yacht viewings, leisure joy rides, new vessel launch ceremonies, on-board pilates classes, fashion shows, and sunset dinner cruises.

Leveraging its unmatched natural marine assets, developing yacht tourism represents a major opportunity to elevate Indonesia's marine tourism industry to the next global level.

The core challenge lies in translating this potential into an integrated, sustainable ecosystem that delivers tangible, fair economic benefits all the way down to local coastal communities.
