The Indonesia national team had to concede Vietnam's superiority after suffering a heavy 0-3 defeat in the ongoing Group A fixture of the 2026 AFF Cup. Playing at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor on Monday evening, 3 August 2026, the Garuda squad struggled to contain the effective, clinical gameplay of the visiting side.
Vietnam's three winning goals were scored by Nguyen Van Vi and Nguyen Hai Long in the first half, before Nguyen Xuan Son extended their lead in the second period.
This defeat dropped Indonesia to 3rd position in the provisional Group A standings, with six points collected from three matches. Vietnam meanwhile took over top spot in the group with seven points, holding a better goal difference over 2nd placed Singapore.

Vietnam applied immediate pressure right from the opening whistle. Just six minutes into the match, Nguyen Hoang Duc played an incisive through ball that was finished off by Nguyen Van Vi. Having beaten the offside trap, Van Vi struck a low driven shot that Nadeo Argawinata was unable to stop, handing Vietnam an early 1-0 lead.
Indonesia attempted to respond in the 12th minute. Mitchell Baker found space after receiving a through pass from Ivar Jenner, but his final finish was too weak, allowing Vietnam goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang to make a comfortable save.
Rather than pulling level, Garuda conceded again only three minutes later. Vietnam broke on a rapid counter attack, as Le Pham Thanh Long played a through ball into the path of Nguyen Hai Long. The unmarked Vietnamese forward cut in from the left flank before beating Nadeo with a well placed low shot into the far corner. The 2-0 scoreline held until the half time interval.
Indonesia emerged for the second half playing with greater aggression when building attacking moves. A golden opportunity arrived in the 58th minute when Thom Haye picked up the ball inside the penalty area, but his effort was once again denied by Patrik Le Giang.
Six minutes later, Mitchell Baker threatened again with a headed effort after connecting with Eliano Reijnders' cross, but the ball drifted just wide of the goal frame.
Vietnam sealed their victory in the 71st minute. Nguyen Hoang Duc once again proved the key playmaker, playing a defence-splitting through ball right through Indonesia's backline. Nguyen Xuan Son successfully evaded the offside trap before firing a low shot that Nadeo Argawinata could not reach.
Indonesia created a late chance to pull a goal back in the 88th minute, as Rizky Eka met Tim Geypens' cross with a headed attempt. Patrik Le Giang however produced another outstanding reflex save to keep out the effort.
The 3-0 scoreline in Vietnam's favour remained unchanged when the referee blew the final whistle.
This result means Indonesia still retain a chance to qualify for the semi-finals, however they must secure a full three points when they face Singapore in their final group stage fixture on 7 August.
Failure to win that match will confirm that Indonesia national team's 2026 AFF Cup campaign ends at the group stage.
