Paris - After years haunted by devastating defeats in major tournament finals, world number 3 Tennis Player Alexander Zverev has finally broken his curse. The 29-year-old German powerhouse has claimed the first Grand Slam title of his entire career, emerging victorious from an emotionally and physically draining dramatic match at the 2026 Roland Garros (French Open).

This achievement on Paris' clay courts completes Zverev's already standout career portfolio. Before lifting this major trophy, he already held two ATP Finals titles, seven ATP Masters 1000 trophies, and the Tokyo Olympic Gold Medal. However, the lack of a Grand Slam title had long remained a glaring gap that left his career feeling unfulfilled.

The final match on Philippe-Chatrier Court concluded on Monday (8/6/2026) local time, with Zverev forced to push every physical limit over 4 hours and 16 minutes of play. Facing a relentless performance from Italian player Flavio Cobolli, Zverev closed out the nail-biting five-set epic with a final score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1.

Zverev established clear dominance in the first and third sets. Cobolli however fought back to take the fourth set through a gruelling, high-stakes tie-break. For a moment this triggered painful past memories, most notably Zverev's tragic late collapse against Dominic Thiem in the 2020 US Open final. But instead of crumbling under pressure, the 198cm athlete rallied emphatically in the fifth set, delivering commanding tennis to seal the decider.

"At first I genuinely could not believe I had won. Then I looked up at the stands and everyone was standing, celebrating this victory," an emotional Zverev stated after the match. "Most of all when I saw my father holding both his hands up. That was the moment I thought to myself: Okay this is real. I finally won."

Roland Garros has always held extreme, conflicting emotions for Zverev. This same venue was where he suffered a career-threatening severe ankle Injury back in 2022. Every one of those dark memories and hardships felt fully redeemed the moment he lifted the trophy in Paris.

"I have laid on this exact court badly injured, I have lost finals here. None of those bad memories will ever be erased completely, but this huge victory today overrides all of them," Zverev declared. "No matter what happens for the rest of my career from this day forward, I will always be a Grand Slam Champion. Nobody can ever take that status away from me."

Zverev dedicated the biggest win of his career entirely to his coaching staff and family. He emphasised that unwavering support from those closest to him during his lowest points formed the foundation of this success. His father Alexander Zverev Sr. works directly as his head coach, while older brother Mischa Zverev fulfils a critical role as his technical and mental mentor.

"This was purely the work of this family and this team. I have been incredibly fortunate to keep this exact same team structure around me for at least 12 years now. That is why every single person in this team deserves to share this Grand Slam trophy equally," he concluded.
