Arteta Confirms Arsenal Have Not Finished Transfer Activity Yet, Focusing on Strengthening the Squad to Defend Their Title

Jakarta - Holding the status of defending English Premier League champions has not made Arsenal stop restructuring their squad. Manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed The Gunners will remain active in the 2026 summer transfer window to strengthen the team ahead of the challenge of retaining their title for the upcoming season.

For Arteta, successfully winning the 2025/26 Premier League title is not the end of the journey. On the contrary, defending the crown will be far more difficult, as all rival clubs will also continuously build their strength throughout the transfer window period.

"We expect there will be transfer activity over the coming weeks, because just like every other club, we want to keep improving. We will not stand still, we are extremely ambitious about what we aim to achieve," Arteta stated, as quoted from Arsenal's official website on Monday, 03/08/2026.

This statement confirms that Arsenal are still open to signing new players before the transfer window closes. However, Arteta declined to discuss specific target players, emphasising that his focus is ensuring the squad has sufficient quality to compete consistently across the full season.

Over recent days, multiple British media outlets have linked Arsenal with Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Arteta however would neither confirm these reports nor comment on any individual player names. He instead chose to direct discussion to the overall needs of the team, rather than address circulating transfer speculation.

Arsenal have already begun their squad restructuring process. The North London club have signed Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, while also making defender Piero Hincapie's move permanent following his impressive loan spell from Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, several players have also departed Emirates Stadium, meaning the team composition may still change right up until the transfer window closes. This situation means Arsenal are widely expected to conduct further transfer business to add squad depth.

Arteta stressed that strengthening the team is not simply about increasing the total number of players. According to the manager, Arsenal must raise overall quality levels while also increasing internal competition for every position, in order to maintain consistent performance throughout the campaign.

"We want to keep improving, and the standard of competition will only get higher. We have to increase competition within the squad, and make sure we can identify every area where the team is still lacking. That is how we are approaching this situation," he explained.

This approach reflects the new challenge now facing Arsenal. After ending their long wait for a Premier League title that had stretched back to the 2003/04 season, The Gunners now enter a completely different phase: remaining the best side in England at a time when all their rivals are also continuously strengthening their own squads.

Arsenal's transfer activity over the coming weeks will be one of the key factors that determines how prepared the club is ahead of the 2026/27 season. Squad depth will be critical, as Arsenal will once again compete across the Premier League, domestic cup competitions and European fixtures.
