Eight Hours Crossing Two Countries, China-Russia Tourist Train Becomes Travelers' New Favorite

Cross-border tourism now has a new face. Where travel between China and Russia was once synonymous with long flights or extended transit processes, travellers now have a far more practical alternative. China and Russia have officially launched a trial international tourist train service connecting Vladivostok, Russia, with Suifenhe, a border city in China's Heilongjiang Province.

This is no ordinary cross-border transport link: the journey itself is designed as an integrated part of the travel experience. Over approximately eight hours, passengers can cross national borders while enjoying the comfort of overland travel that is steadily growing in popularity among travellers worldwide.

The inaugural service, which operated on Sunday 18 July 2026, received immediate positive reception from travellers of both nations. The first group of Russian tourists arrived in Suifenhe to begin a four-day tour package in China. Meanwhile, around 180 Chinese tourists departed for Vladivostok on the same train running the reverse route.

This new route has come as welcome news for overland travel enthusiasts. Unlike air travel, which often functions solely as a means to reach a final destination, train travel allows passengers to experience the landscape, local culture, and the unique atmosphere of the border region up close.

Train tourism as a whole has recorded consistent growth in recent years. Many travellers now seek slower, unrushed journeys that minimise transport transfers, while delivering a far more authentic experience than short-haul flights.

Eight Hour Journey With Comfortable Onboard Facilities

The trip between Vladivostok and Suifenhe runs for approximately eight hours. During travel, passengers may choose standard seating, or open-concept bunk sleeping cabins designed for medium-distance journeys.

For travellers seeking upgraded comfort, soft sleeper cabins are available fitted with private en-suite shower facilities. These amenities make cross-border travel feel significantly more relaxed, particularly for passengers wishing to enjoy their journey without rushing.

Notably, enthusiasm for this new service has been remarkably high. Some travellers even travelled thousands of kilometres specifically to be among the first passengers on this route.

"I flew over 2,000 kilometres from Zhejiang Province in eastern China just to try this train. Right now I just cannot wait to board," stated Chinese traveller Gao Hailong, as quoted by Bastillepost on Saturday (25/7).

Projected As A New Tourism Attraction

Regional authorities frame this tourist train service not just as transport infrastructure, but as a strategic initiative to strengthen cross-border tourism sectors.

"This service opens an efficient, comfortable cross-border tourism corridor. Travellers from both nations can now complete their entire journey by train directly to their destination with no transit required, while also cutting cross-border travel costs significantly," stated Cong Yunhong, Deputy Director of Mudanjiang Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sports, Radio, Television and Tourism.

This optimism is supported by rising tourist mobility along the border zone. Since visa-free entry for Russian travellers was implemented in September 2025, visitor volumes to Heilongjiang Province have continued to record growth.

Data for the first half of 2026 shows Suifenhe Land Port processed over 310,000 total border crossings, marking an increase of approximately 30.6% compared to the same period the prior year.

This trend demonstrates the enormous cross-border tourism potential across East Asia. With the launch of this international tourist train, cross-border travel has become simpler, more time efficient, and delivers an experience that cannot be replicated when travelling by air.
