The Indonesia National Team will begin their 2026 AFF Cup campaign by facing Cambodia in their opening Group A match. On paper, the Garuda squad are clear favourites. However, head-to-head records from the last two editions prove that Cambodia are no longer an opponent that can be easily defeated.

The Indonesia vs Cambodia match will be held at Gelora Pakansari Stadium on Monday 27 July, kicking off at 20.30 WIB. This opening fixture marks a critical first step for John Herdman's side as they bid to secure a spot in the semi-final round.

In Group A, Indonesia will compete alongside Vietnam, Singapore, Timor Leste and Cambodia.

Cambodia Consistently Push Indonesia Hard

Even though Indonesia have won their last two AFF Cup meetings against Cambodia, neither victory came easily.

At the 2020 AFF Cup, Indonesia secured a 4-2 win at Bishan Stadium, Singapore. On that occasion, two goals from Rachmat Irianto and Evan Dimas were cancelled out by Yue Safy before half time.

In the second half, Ramai Rumakiek extended Indonesia's lead, only for Cambodia to hit back once again through Mony Udom before the match finished 4-2.

Two years later, the story repeated itself. At the 2022 AFF Cup held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Indonesia could only scrape a narrow 2-1 victory.

Egy Maulana Vikri put Garuda ahead first, before Sareth Krya equalised, with Witan Sulaeman eventually sealing the win for Indonesia.

These two matches demonstrate that Cambodia are capable of applying pressure throughout the full 90 minutes, and force Indonesia to work relentlessly to claim all three points.

A Crucial Start To The John Herdman Era

This fixture against Cambodia is the first real test for head coach John Herdman, who is still finalising his best squad for the biennial tournament.

As of this time, PSSI have not yet announced the final squad list that will represent Indonesia at the 2026 AFF Cup. Players are currently undergoing a training camp in Gianyar, Bali, ahead of the final squad confirmation.

A positive result in this opening match will provide vital momentum for Garuda as they navigate the group stage.

A Tough Schedule Awaits Indonesia

Following the Cambodia match, Indonesia will travel for an away fixture against Timor Leste, before returning to Pakansari Stadium to face formidable rivals Vietnam.

The group stage will conclude with an away trip to Singapore, in a match that is widely expected to decide semi-final qualification places.

With a congested fixture list and fierce competition within Group A, Indonesia will need to collect maximum points right from their first match.

Do Not Be Complacent With Favourite Status

On paper, Indonesia still hold a quality advantage over Cambodia. However, the rapid development of Southeast Asian football over recent years has narrowed the gap in strength between nations in the region.

Cambodia have repeatedly shown improved performances, and have proven they can trouble top sides in the region including Indonesia.

For that reason, there is no room for complacency for Garuda. Securing three points in the opening match will lay a critical foundation ahead of far stiffer challenges against Vietnam and Singapore, as the side fight for a place in the knockout stages.
