Planning an overseas holiday is no longer just a matter of choosing beautiful destinations these days. For Indonesian travellers, travel costs, currency exchange rates, and even the ease of processing visas are all taken into consideration before booking flight tickets and putting together an itinerary.

Countries that provide visa-free facilities or offer simplified entry processes are highly sought after. Aside from saving time, this allows travellers to cut down administrative costs, so that travel budgets can be reallocated for other needs.

Currency exchange rates are another major factor. The more favourable a country's exchange rate is against the Indonesian Rupiah, the easier it is for travellers to estimate expenses for food, transport, shopping, and accommodation throughout their trip.

Based on Refinitiv data, there are a number of countries with relatively low currency values against the Rupiah. This list includes Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and South Korea.

Vietnam is one of the most appealing destinations for Indonesian travellers. Along with its relatively close distance, the country offers budget-friendly travel costs across dining, public transport, right through to accommodation.

With an exchange rate of 1 Vietnamese Dong equivalent to IDR 0.67, Indonesian travellers have much greater flexibility when making transactions. It comes as no surprise that Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Ha Long Bay consistently remain favourite destinations for visitors from Indonesia.

Thailand also maintains its position as a top favourite destination. The Land of the White Elephant offers a combination of shopping tourism, street food, tropical beaches, and rich cultural heritage. With an exchange rate of 1 Thai Baht equivalent to IDR 536.89, this country is considered very accessible for Indonesian travellers.

Cambodia can be another alternative within the Southeast Asian region. This country offers historical tourism through the magnificent Angkor Wat complex in Siem Reap, riverfront districts in Phnom Penh, as well as a wide variety of traditional markets and local cuisine. For exchange rates, 1 Cambodian Riel is equivalent to IDR 4.42.
