Kylian Mbappe demonstrated his status as leader of France's Golden Generation at the 2026 World Cup. The captain scored two goals to guide Les Bleus to a 3-1 victory over Senegal in the opening Group I fixture at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.
This win became the ideal start for France in their bid to reach the final for the third consecutive tournament. Alongside the two goals from Mbappe, the remaining goal was scored by Bradley Barcola, while Senegal only managed a consolation strike through Ibrahim Mbaye in Injury time.
This result puts France at the top of the provisional Standings for Group I with three points. Meanwhile, Senegal occupy the bottom of the Standings after failing to collect any points from their first match.

Despite the defeat, Senegal put up an aggressive fight right from the opening whistle. The African representative even created the first chance of the match when Nicolas Jackson unleashed a threatening shot towards the French goal.
Approaching halftime, Senegal once again forced Les Bleus' defensive line to work overtime. Ismaila Sarr picked up a clear goalscoring opportunity on this occasion, but his final effort flew well over the crossbar.
After struggling to penetrate Senegal's tight defence, France raised their playing intensity in the second half. Michael Olise tested Edouard Mendy, but the Senegalese Goalkeeper produced a sharp save.
Mbappe went on to threaten the Senegal goal on multiple occasions, but Mendy remained solid protecting his net.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute. Mbappe unleashed a powerful shot that Mendy could not stop, Putting France 1-0 ahead.
Senegal responded quickly through Nicolas Jackson, but the goal was disallowed by the referee for an offside position.
France extended their advantage in the 82nd minute. Adrien Rabiot delivered a cross that Bradley Barcola converted to make the score 2-0, as Les Bleus took full control of the match.
Just as the fixture appeared set to end comfortably for France, Ibrahim Mbaye reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 90+5th minute.
Senegal's hope was short lived however. Less than one minute later, Mbappe once again showed his world class quality by netting his second goal of the night to confirm France's 3-1 victory.
