2026 World Cup is not only about fierce competition, tactical battles, and the fight for Football's most prestigious global trophy. As the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico approaches, a deeply heartfelt story has emerged about the unbreakable bond of friendship forged on the football pitch.

Andy Robertson, Scotland National Team Captain and Liverpool's starting first-choice fullback, received a personal letter from Rute Cardoso, wife of the late Diogo Jota. In the message, Cardoso wrote an emotional tribute about her husband's shared dream with Robertson to compete together at the World Cup.

Quoted officially from FIFA's website on Tuesday, this letter was sent as a gesture of gratitude from Cardoso to Robertson, for continuously honouring Jota's memory and carrying their shared promise all the way to the World Cup stage.

In her letter, Cardoso explained she was overcome with feeling after watching Robertson speak publicly about Scotland's long-awaited return to the World Cup tournament.

"When I heard your words. After I understood everything you felt that day, when Scotland finally qualified for the World Cup after all those years waiting, I realised Diogo never truly left the pitch," Cardoso wrote.

This line stands as a quiet reminder: a player's presence does not simply vanish the moment they step away from the field. Time and again, the memories and dreams built together will carry on living.

Cardoso went on to write a tender message, expressing her quiet conviction that when Robertson walks out onto the 2026 World Cup pitch wearing Scotland's colours, Diogo Jota will be right there beside him.

"By reaching this moment, by securing your place at the World Cup, you will not walk alone. You will carry his dream with you," the letter reads.

"And when you step out onto that field, I know it will not be just you walking out there. Diogo will be there in your thoughts, in every step you take, inside your heart," the letter continues.

Cardoso sent this message after watching an interview where Robertson opened up about how he still carries the loss of Diogo Jota. During that same interview, Robertson had spoken about the promise the two close friends once made to play alongside each other at the 2026 World Cup.

For Robertson, Scotland's historic qualification for the World Cup finals after 28 years of absence immediately brought his late friend to mind.

Upon receiving the letter, Robertson admitted he was deeply moved. He shared that memories of the Portuguese forward remain a constant part of his daily life.

"He's always there. He's always something we think about. Those memories are always things we talk about - sometimes we laugh over them, sometimes we cry," Robertson shared.

He confirmed he will not be playing only for himself when he takes the pitch at the 2026 World Cup.

"I know he will always be on my mind the moment I walk out at that World Cup. And yes, I'm not just playing for myself. I'm playing for both of us," he stated.

While reaching the 2026 World Cup stands as one of the greatest career milestones for Robertson with Scotland, this tournament now holds a far deeper, personal meaning for him.

Every step he takes on that world stage will carry the memory of a friend who once dreamed of standing right there beside him.
