2026 Hungarian GP: Norris wins, Verstappen finishes as runner-up, Antonelli remains leading the championship standings.

Lando Norris finally registered his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season after delivering a dominant performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix held at the Hungaroring Circuit on Sunday, 26 July 2026. The McLaren driver successfully outpaced all his rivals after maintaining consistent form throughout the entire race.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen had to settle for second place, while Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli completed the podium with a third-place finish.

Starting from pole position, Norris immediately demonstrated his raw speed the moment the starting lights went out. The British driver maintained a steady race rhythm across all 70 laps, holding position right at the front of the field.

The decisive winning moment arrived on lap 46, when Norris successfully overtook Antonelli to claim the race lead. After taking first position, he consistently managed the gap to his competitors before crossing the finish line as race winner.

This result marks Norris' first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign, and also takes his all-time career win tally in motorsport's premier series to 12.

Verstappen Capitalises On Late Race Drama

Max Verstappen secured his runner-up position by taking full advantage of an incident that unfolded in the closing stages of the grand prix.

The opportunity opened up when Oscar Piastri, who had been running comfortably in second place, suffered a gearbox failure on his car and was forced to retire from the race on lap 56.

This development promoted Verstappen up to second place, where he successfully defended his position until the chequered flag.

Elsewhere, Kimi Antonelli displayed remarkable composure under pressure. Despite sustained attacks from chasing drivers in the final laps, the Mercedes rookie held on firmly to third place right through to the finish.

Charles Leclerc classified fourth overall, after Lewis Hamilton received a five-second time penalty for exceeding the speed limit when entering the pit lane. Hamilton had originally crossed the finish line in fourth position, but dropped to fifth once the penalty was applied to his race time.

Antonelli Remains Secure At The Top Of The Standings

The Hungarian Grand Prix was the final round of the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season, before the championship enters its scheduled summer break.

Despite failing to take victory, Kimi Antonelli retains the lead of the Drivers' Championship standings with 219 points after 11 rounds. He holds a 50-point advantage over second-placed Lewis Hamilton, who sits on 169 points.

Meanwhile George Russell, who finished seventh at the Hungarian Grand Prix, currently occupies third position in the standings with a total of 160 points.

Following the approximately four-week break, Formula 1 will return for Round 12, the Dutch Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place on 23 August.
