The atmosphere of Bukittinggi City will grow even more vibrant this coming June. The Bukittinggi Municipal Government has prepared a grand celebration to mark the centenary of Jam Gadang, the legendary tourism icon that has long stood as a proud symbol for the Minangkabau community.

This 100th anniversary of Jam Gadang will not be held as an ordinary formal ceremony. Instead, it will be presented through an international-standard series of arts, culture and literacy festivals, with official delegations attending from countries worldwide.

Bukittinggi Mayor Ramlan Nurmatias stated his hope that Jam Gadang will no longer only be recognised at national level, but will gain proper global standing.

“Jam Gadang no longer needs introduction within Indonesia. It is time to showcase it on the international stage. Twenty separate events will run from early June, culminating in the main celebration on 21 June. 36 official delegations and foreign ambassadors are confirmed to attend,” Ramlan Nurmatias announced in Bukittinggi.

The One Century of Jam Gadang celebrations will be hosted under the 4th International Minangkabau Literacy Festival (IMLF-4), with the official theme “100 Years of Jam Gadang & From Literacy to Legacy: Building Wealth, Peace and Sustainability Learning”.

This 5-day festival will run 3–7 June, attended by 259 delegate participants from 36 nations. Confirmed attending countries include Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, India, South Korea, Japan, United States of America, Spain, Palestine and Yemen.

“This literacy and Cultural Festival will run for five full consecutive days from 3 to 7 June, with 259 registered delegates travelling from 36 different countries,” he added.

Diverse engaging programmes have been prepared for this historic milestone. The Pasa Ateh commercial district and Jam Gadang public plaza will host book exhibitions, local MSME bazaars, and live painting demonstrations featuring professional artists.

Additionally, the main plenary seminar at Balairung Hall will examine the history and ongoing cultural significance of Jam Gadang from multiple academic and community perspectives. International delegates will also take part in a symbolic planting of 100 native trees, nature-themed poetry recitals, and Cultural Site Visits to Tabiang Barasok.

Each evening, authentic Minangkabau cultural atmosphere will fill the site through the Randai Festival programme and traditional performing arts shows held around the Jam Gadang grounds.

“After sunset, audiences will be hosted to the Randai Festival and traditional performance showcases at the Jam Gadang precinct. This will be followed by the unveiling of a 100-metre continuous calligraphy artwork, launch of 100 new published books, and the dedicated Cultural Seminar,” he explained.

The celebrations will also include a parade of 1000 women wearing full traditional Minangkabau ceremonial attire, paired with the World Poetry Reading event featuring 100 poets from across the globe. Bukittinggi's central main roads will be closed and transformed into open, colourful cultural performance stages.

Beyond arts and cultural programming, IMLF-4 will also host structured policy discussions on tourism development and Creative Economy frameworks, designed to strengthen West Sumatra's tourism sector.

International delegates will additionally participate in the IMLF Goes to School outreach programme and the Integrated Educational Tourism (WIDURI) initiative, which includes an official visit to the Bung Hatta Birthplace Museum.

For the event closing, 1500 to 2000 participants are expected to join the IMLF Jam Gadang Fun Run. Young children will also be included in the festivities through a public colouring competition held at the Jam Gadang precinct.

“With projected visitor numbers of 500 to 1000 people daily throughout the festival, IMLF-4 is expected to generate tangible momentum for the local Creative Economy, particularly for hundreds of small and micro local business owners,” he stated.

The Bukittinggi Municipal Government is currently finalising all technical preparations, including main stage construction, site lighting design and integrated security protocols to deliver a safe, high quality experience for all visiting international guests.
