Jonatan Christie, commonly known as Jojo, has been knocked out of the Quarter Finals of the BWF World Tour Super 500 Malaysia Masters 2026 after suffering an unexpected defeat against young Chinese shuttler Hu Zhe An. Jojo has now redirected his focus towards the next two major tournaments: the BWF World Tour Super 750 Singapore Open, and the Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2026.
Competing at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur on Friday, Jojo actually began the match on strong footing. He claimed the first game convincingly with a score of 21-14 after dominating play from the first rally.
He opened the match aggressively to jump straight to a 5-0 lead. Jojo's fast-paced play shut down all space for Hu Zhe An to build his own game rhythm. He extended his lead to a comfortable 11-5 margin at the first game interval before securing the opening game win.

The momentum shifted entirely in the second game. Hu began to read Jojo's playing patterns and stepped up his confidence during long rally exchanges. The unseeded 19-year-old gradually took control of the match, holding an 11-7 advantage at the mid-game interval.
“In the second game he started reading my game patterns really well, and I was not prepared enough to adjust my strategy quickly,” Jojo stated in an official press release from PP PBSI.
After the interval break, Hu's mounting pressure became increasingly difficult to contain. Jojo briefly narrowed the point gap, but Hu pulled away once again with a streak of consecutive points to force the match into a deciding rubber game.
The final game remained tightly contested until scores were level at 7-7. A series of unforced errors then saw Jonatan fall behind 7-11 by the interval. Though he fought back to close the gap to 11-12 then 14-15, Jojo failed to maintain consistent performance.
“I was trailing in the third game and tried hard to chase the score back. But I lost several crucial points, and turning the match around at that point was never going to be easy,” he explained.
Hu eventually closed out the match with a 21-16 third game win, concluding the 71-minute contest. This result further solidifies his status as one of the rising young talents now catching attention at the elite global Badminton level.
Prior to this match, Hu had also eliminated French shuttler Alex Lanier in the second tournament round.
Despite his early exit at Malaysia Masters, Jonatan has chosen to immediately focus on his upcoming schedule. Indonesia's leading men's singles player is now concentrating fully on preparations for the Singapore Open and Indonesia Open 2026.
“Moving forward, preparations for Singapore and Indonesia will need to be refined properly. Every tournament plays differently. Court conditions and shuttlecock behaviour here, in Singapore, and in Indonesia are all distinct, so I will need to adapt fast,” he concluded.
