Amid global economic pressures that have led many people to become more selective in managing expenses, the Budget Travel trend is actually seeing growing adoption across Indonesia. Travelling is no longer inherently tied to high costs or luxury trips. More flexible, short-duration, budget-friendly Tour Packages have emerged as a new solution for travellers who wish to enjoy Holiday moments without depleting their savings.

The Indonesian Travel Agents Association (Astindo) assesses that this adaptive tour package concept creates a major opportunity to sustain domestic tourism activity, particularly for lower and middle-income communities.

"These adjusted tour packages are tailored for current conditions: shorter durations, focused on regional destinations, and priced at far more accessible budget points," stated Astindo Chairwoman Pauline Suharno, as quoted by Antara on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.

This adaptive tourism model delivers holiday experiences aligned with current economic realities. Trip lengths are shortened, destinations are located closer to home, while still delivering meaningful, engaging experiences for visitors.

Overland road travel is one of the fastest growing trends gaining public interest. Beyond lower costs, this style of travel allows people to experience the journey at a relaxed pace while exploring multiple towns and cities along a single route.

Astindo is also developing dedicated travel packages using sleeper buses and national rail services, specifically to reduce transportation costs which consistently represent the single largest expense for most holiday trips.

Pauline confirmed this travel model offers significantly greater flexibility compared to traditional packaged tours. One notable difference is that groups are no longer required to take all meals together as was standard on older tour formats.

"This approach also aligns with sustainability principles. When we design and operate these travel packages, we are able to generate direct positive impact for local communities," Pauline added.

Sustainable Tourism has indeed become a core priority for modern travellers. Today's visitors do not only seek out scenic destinations, they actively look for experiences that support local economies - including staying at community-owned accommodation and patronising authentic regional food vendors.

One live package currently being rolled out by Astindo is an overland rail journey Running from Yogyakarta to Banyuwangi, and Yogyakarta to Solo. This itinerary allows travellers to enjoy a laid back trip with scheduled stops at multiple points of interest along the route.

"This is overland travel by train. We have already run trial operations for this route. Our hope is that during Long Weekend breaks, people will not just stay home, but will take these local clustered travel trips instead," she explained.

This short-trip travel trend also matches the preferences of Young Generation travellers, who overwhelmingly favour quick short escapes over extended holidays. Along with saving time, this format is far easier to accommodate around work schedules and monthly personal budgets.

Beyond developing new tour products, Pauline emphasised that public outreach and education around Budget Travel must be continuously expanded, to help more people understand that travelling can be done responsibly within measured, affordable costs.

Effective cross-government coordination was also highlighted as a critical requirement to support growth of the national tourism sector, which delivers broad cascading economic benefits across communities.

"Coordination between ministries and state institutions is essential, to avoid policy decisions that harm the tourism industry. Tourism has extremely wide multiplier effects across the economy. We require aligned support across immigration authorities, finance departments, and human resources agencies," she concluded.
