Austria national team head coach Ralf Rangnick has set ambitious standout targets for his squad at the 2026 World Cup. Drawing lessons from their exit at the Round of 16 of Euro 2024, the former Manchester United tactician is determined to guide Das Team much further this time around. His core targets are to progress past the group stage, and secure at least one victory in their first knockout phase match.

Via the official website of the Austrian Football Association (OFB) on Tuesday 19 May 2026, the 26-man squad that will form the backbone of the team at the 2026 World Cup was officially announced. This squad remains built around established core players, including David Alaba, Marko Arnautovic, Konrad Laimer, Marcel Sabitzer and Kevin Danso.

Rangnick has publicly stated his confidence that with this current squad composition, Austria can compete at the highest level and prove the team's quality. For the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Austria will begin their campaign in Group J, where they will face off against defending champions Argentina, Algeria and Jordan.

Beneath this strong optimism, Ralf Rangnick holds an absolutely critical role. The veteran German head coach is widely recognised as one of the great innovators of modern Football tactics, most famous for developing the Gegenpressing philosophy: an intense high-pressure playing style designed to win back possession as quickly as possible after losing the ball.

Across his career, Rangnick has built an impressive track record with multiple top European clubs. He lifted the DFB-Pokal (2010/11) and DFL-Supercup with Schalke 04, oversaw the historic rise of both TSG Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, and also managed Manchester United during the 2021/22 season before taking the Austria national team post in mid-2022.

For the Austria national team itself, qualifying for the 2026 World Cup is a long-awaited, historic milestone for their supporters. This global tournament hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico marks Das Team's return to football's biggest stage after an absence of 28 years.

Austria last appeared at the World Cup in the 1998 edition held in France, where they were eliminated at the group stage. That wait spanning over two decades has finally been rewarded, thanks to the consistent performances delivered by Rangnick's squad.

Austria secured their 2026 World Cup spot after an impressive qualifying run, where they finished top of their group in the UEFA European Qualification zone. The combination of Rangnick's modern disciplined tactical system, blended with veteran leaders such as David Alaba and the energy of young emerging talent, has completely transformed Austrian football.

Now backed by a winning mentality and a cohesive balanced squad, Austria will arrive at the 2026 World Cup not just as an also-ran participant: they are prepared to pull off upsets, and go toe to toe with footballing heavyweights including the defending champions Argentina.
