Egypt national team qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after eliminating Australia through a dramatic penalty shootout in the Round of 32 match at AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Saturday WIB. After the match finished 1-1 over 120 minutes of play, Egypt claimed a 4-2 victory in the penalty shootout.
This result keeps Egypt's World Cup 2026 campaign alive. In the upcoming Round of 16 fixture, Mohamed Salah and his squad will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde.
Australia started the match with full confidence. Cristian Volpato's strike nearly put the Socceroos ahead early on, but his effort struck the crossbar.

Egypt responded with clinical efficiency. In the 13th minute, Karim Hafez played a cross that Emam Ashour converted to open the scoring. Holding a 1-0 lead, Egypt maintained control of the match tempo all the way through to half-time.
Heading into the second half, Omar Marmoush came close to doubling Egypt's advantage, but his final finish drifted wide of Australia's goal.
Australia equalised in the 55th minute via an own goal from Mohamed Hany. The Egyptian defender failed to deal with an incoming ball, which deflected off him into his own net, bringing the score to 1-1.
As normal time neared its end, Egypt repeatedly threatened Australia's backline. One of their best chances came from Rami Rabia's strike, but goalkeeper Patrick Beach pulled off a crucial save to keep the scores level.
After 90 minutes of regular play concluded with the score still locked at 1-1, the match progressed into extra time.
During the first half of extra time, an attempt from Mohamed Salah failed to hit the target.
The second half of extra time was played at a high intensity, however neither side found a winning goal before the final extra time whistle was blown.
Egypt performed with far greater composure and precision during the penalty shootout. They secured the 4-2 victory after Australia's first two penalty takers Harry Souttar and Lucas Harrington both failed to convert their kicks.
