Asia's hope of making history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been dashed. All nine representatives from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) were confirmed eliminated following the conclusion of the Round of 32, with not a single Asian nation advancing to the Round of 16.
This result stands as a disappointing milestone for the AFC. Despite benefiting from the World Cup's expanded format that increased total participating teams to 48, the extra qualification slots granted to the confederation have failed to translate into improved on-field performance.
Seven out of the nine Asian representatives were already knocked out during the group stage alone, making the AFC the confederation with the highest early elimination rate at this year's tournament.

Positive Momentum as Japan's Advantage Ahead of Facing Brazil in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32
Zico has warned Brazil that Japan could pose a serious threat in the Round of 32 stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Only two sides, Japan and Australia, had kept Asian hopes alive. Both teams qualified out of their groups, but their runs came to an end in their respective Round of 32 fixtures.
Japan delivered a promising campaign through the group phase. The Samurai Blue finished as Group F runners-up without dropping a single match. However, their progress was halted after falling 1-2 to Brazil in the Round of 32.
Australia stood as Asia's very last hope to break into the Round of 16. Nevertheless, the Socceroos also saw their tournament end after being defeated by Egypt via a penalty shootout.
Meanwhile, the remaining seven Asian representatives failed to even progress past the group stage.
South Korea and Iran both collected three points in their respective groups, but this total was not sufficient to qualify either nation through the best third-placed team ranking path.
For South Korea, this early exit resulted in the resignation of head coach Hong Myung-bo.
Qatar and Jordan also performed far below expectations. As the reigning Asian Cup champions and runners-up respectively, both sides failed to reach their usual standard. A run of opening match defeats forced both teams to exit the tournament prematurely.
Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Uzbekistan shared the same fate. All three nations struggled to match the playing intensity of European and South American opposition, finishing their group campaigns at the bottom of their respective standings.
These statistics reveal that nearly half of all teams eliminated during the group stage hailed from the Asian zone.
This outcome has attracted widespread criticism, particularly given that the AFC was awarded additional qualification slots as part of the expanded World Cup format.
The Round of 32 exits of Japan and Australia officially brought the entire 2026 World Cup campaign for all Asian representatives to an end.
