The failure of the Indonesian Thomas Indonesia team at Thomas Cup 2026 delivered a crushing blow, shaking the foundations of national Badminton. For the first time in history, the Red-and-White squad was eliminated in the group stage—a result forcing PBSI to conduct comprehensive reflection, from coaching structures to match mental readiness.

PP PBSI Head of Development and Achievement, Eng Hian, did not hide his disappointment. He publicly apologized for the team's performance falling far below expectations.

"On behalf of PBSI, I apologize for failing to deliver the best results in this Thomas Cup. We must admit France performed better than us," stated Eng Hian.

Indonesia was confirmed eliminated from Group D after finishing third with only two points.

A decisive 1-4 defeat against the French Thomas Team in the crucial match ended the team's journey bitterly. Meanwhile, Thailand and France advanced to the knockout stage with superior set differences.

Eng Hian emphasized this loss reflected not just the score but opponents' effectiveness in capitalizing on every opportunity.

"We accept this result and acknowledge the French team's superiority in exploiting chances exceptionally well in every match," he said.

On court, team captain Fajar Alfian shouldered responsibility. The 31-year-old Badminton Player admitted the team hadn't reached peak performance despite maximum effort.

"On behalf of the Indonesian Thomas team, I apologize for last night's defeat. We tried our best, but the French team also performed excellently," said Fajar Alfian in a PBSI statement.

Historically, this marks Indonesia's worst Thomas Cup result.

Previously, the lowest achievement occurred in 2012 when the team only reached the Quarter-Finals. Now, group-stage elimination serves as a harsh wake-up call for the national development system.

PBSI acted swiftly. Comprehensive evaluation was promised, focusing on improving performance consistency, physical readiness, and mental strength—three aspects deemed crucial against flexible teams like France.

For the Indonesian Thomas squad, this defeat isn't an end but a turning point. Pressure now transforms into motivation to rebuild strength and restore glory on the world stage.
