Long-awaited news for climbers has finally arrived. The hiking trail of Mount Semeru officially reopened starting Friday, April 24, 2026. After being temporarily closed due to Extreme Weather, Java's highest mountain is now accessible again, albeit with several strict regulations for climber safety and Environmental Conservation.

The reopening of the hiking trail was announced directly by the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (Balai Besar Taman Nasional Bromo Tengger Semeru or TNBTS). This decision was made following a cross-sectoral coordination meeting that considered trail conditions, safety factors, and the readiness of the area after recent severe weather.

However, for climbers eager to conquer Mahameru, there's crucial information. For the time being, climbing is only permitted up to the Ranu Kumbolo area, one of the most iconic spots on the Semeru trail, famous for its high-altitude lake panorama and captivating hills.

"Mount Semeru climbing activities reopen starting April 24, 2026, with the endpoint for climbs set at Ranu Kumbolo," stated Rudijanta in his official announcement.

This restriction is part of a phased evaluation before the management later decides whether the route to the Mahameru summit can be fully reopened.

For hiking and Nature Tourism enthusiasts, Ranu Kumbolo itself is more than just a transit point. This destination is renowned as one of Indonesia's favorite camping areas, with sunrise views often sought after by climbers and nature photographers.

Climbing Quota Restricted, Mandatory Online Booking for Climbers

TNBTS is also implementing a quota restriction system to maintain the environmental carrying capacity of the national park area. The number of climbers is limited to only 200 people per day, with a maximum hiking duration of two days and one night.

The entire ticket reservation process must now be done online through the official TNBTS website. Prospective climbers are required to complete the booking and payment process at least two days before the scheduled departure date.

This rule is enforced to reduce queues at the entrance while ensuring a more orderly and safer climber registration process.

Additionally, the management also emphasized that all climbers must comply with the latest updated standard operating procedures following recent Extreme Weather conditions.

"Every climber must follow the updated Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Mount Semeru Climbing in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park," he stressed.

Previous Closure Triggered by Extreme Weather

Before reopening, the Semeru trail had been closed for a considerable period due to increased risks of extreme weather in the mountainous region.

The Balai Besar TNBTS previously extended the closure after receiving warnings about potential heavy rain, strong winds, and landslide risks based on weather monitoring and recommendations from BMKG (Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency).

"This step is a form of anticipation and protection for the safety and comfort of visitors from potential natural disaster threats," said Rudijanta in his official statement.

For nature-loving travelers, Semeru's reopening is undoubtedly an anticipated moment. Although reaching the Mahameru summit isn't yet possible, the journey to Ranu Kumbolo still offers a serene trekking experience with the captivating landscapes typical of East Java's mountains.
