Jakarta – Mourning shrouds the Indonesian Martial Arts world. Indra Kartasasmita, a legendary figure and principal founder of the Indonesian Shorinji Kempo Brotherhood (Perkemi), breathed his last on Wednesday (22/4/2026) at 01.29 AM WIB in Jakarta.
The passing of the figure known as Sensei Indra is a profound loss for the National Sports community. The deceased's body is being laid in state at the Honbu or Perkemi Education and Training Center (Pusdiklat) in Pondok Gede, Bekasi, the place that served as the center of his dedication for decades.
A Spirit Still Burning Bright in His Twilight Years
Chairman of the Central KONI, Marciano Norman, expressed deep condolences over the passing of this member of the Central KONI Supervisory Board. He recalled meeting the deceased some time ago while he was undergoing medical treatment.
"When Central KONI officials and I visited him, he still showed a fiery spirit. He was a figure consistently nurturing athletes until the end of his life," Marciano stated in his official remarks received by ANTARA.
Building Kempo from Ground Zero
Indra Kartasasmita was the chief architect who introduced Shorinji Kempo to Indonesia. Together with his sibling, Ginanjar Kartasasmita, and the late Utin Sahraz, he founded the organization on February 2, 1966.
Through his steady hand and leadership vision, Kempo grew from a limited Martial Arts practice into a world-respected achievement Sports organization:
- National Pioneer: Pioneered the first National Championships (Kejurnas) in 1970 until its inclusion as an official sport in the VII National Games (PON) in 1977.
- World Recognition: Led Indonesia to become a member of the World Shorinji Kempo Organization (WSKO) and established Indonesia as one of the largest Kempo powers outside Japan.
An Enduring Legacy for the Red and White
Throughout his life, Sensei Indra not only taught martial arts techniques but also the Kempo philosophy emphasizing the balance between strength and compassion. His leadership ensured the regeneration of Indonesian Kempo athletes remained strong, leading to the Red and White flag frequently flying on international podiums.
His unwavering dedication, from the organization's founding in 1966 to his final role as supervisor of National Sports, stands as boundless proof of Sensei Indra's love for advancing Indonesian Achievement.
