The President's Cup will be held once again in 2026 as Indonesia's most prestigious pre-season football tournament. Entering its 8th edition, this competition is not only a warm-up event ahead of the new league season, but also marks a long running history of Indonesian national football development.

Throughout the tournament's history, Arema FC stands as the undisputed dominant force of the President's Cup. The club nicknamed Singo Edan (The Mad Lions) still holds the record for the most titles to date, with four championship trophies under their name.

The President's Cup was first established in 2015, created as a solution after national football competitions were suspended in May that same year. This tournament acted as a temporary replacement for the Indonesia Super League (ISL), while also keeping public enthusiasm for Indonesian football alive during the hiatus.

The opening match was hosted at Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium, Gianyar on 30 August 2015. On that day, Bali United kicked off the inaugural tournament with a convincing 3-0 victory over Persija Jakarta.

The first edition was ultimately won by Persib Bandung, who defeated Sriwijaya FC 2-0 in the final match held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta.

The tournament was not held in 2016, as the Indonesia Soccer Championship operated as the active national competition that year. One year later, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) revived the President's Cup as an official pre-season tournament, featuring 20 clubs from Indonesia's top two national league divisions.

This revival marked the beginning of Arema FC's dominance. The Malang-based club claimed the 2017 President's Cup title after delivering a crushing 5-1 victory over Pusamania Borneo FC at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor Regency.

Persija Jakarta briefly claimed the trophy in 2018, beating Bali United 3-0 at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium. However, Arema reasserted their supremacy the following year.

For the 2019 edition, the final was reformatted into a two-legged home and away fixture. Arema FC emerged as champions after overcoming Persebaya Surabaya with an aggregate score of 4-2 across the matches held in Surabaya and Malang.

The tournament went on another hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, before returning in 2022. Arema FC once again claimed the championship title, defeating Borneo Samarinda with an aggregate score of 1-0 in the final round.

Singo Edan's dominance continued into the 2024 President's Cup. This time, they retained their title after beating Borneo Samarinda 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout, following a 1-1 regular time draw at Manahan Stadium, Solo.

This victory cemented Arema's record of four President's Cup trophies, the most of any club in the tournament's entire history.

A new milestone was reached in the 2025 edition. For the first time ever, the President's Cup invited international clubs to compete in the tournament.

Oxford United from England and Port FC from Thailand participated as invited teams, with Port FC becoming the first ever foreign club to win the tournament after defeating Oxford United 2-1 in the final match.

Now, the 2026 President's Cup will introduce another new innovation. The tournament will be split into two separate categories: the President's Cup Super Match featuring Super League clubs and invited international teams, and the President's Cup League 4, a dedicated competition for clubs competing in Indonesia's fourth tier of football.

The international flavour of the tournament will be maintained, with confirmed visiting teams including Port FC (Thailand), Tampines Rovers (Singapore) and DPMM FC (Brunei Darussalam). The participation of these overseas clubs is expected to raise competition standards while also building the regional competitive capability of Indonesian domestic clubs.
