England's hopes of ending their long wait to reach a World Cup final have once again been dashed. The Three Lions were forced to concede defeat to Argentina with a final score of 1-2 in the 2026 World Cup semi-final match held at Atlanta Stadium, early Thursday morning WIB.

England were actually on the right track after Anthony Gordon put Thomas Tuchel's side ahead first. However, this lead could not be maintained, as Argentina fought back through goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez.

England captain Harry Kane assessed that the shift in playing style after taking the lead was one of the main factors that caused his team to lose control of the match.

According to the Bayern Munich striker, England became overly focused on protecting their advantage, which gave Argentina room to continuously ramp up pressure.

"This result is obviously deeply disappointing for all the players, coaching staff, and every one of our supporters. We actually played quite well for almost the entire match. But after going 1-0 up, we became far too focused on holding that lead. At a World Cup semi-final, that kind of approach is never enough to secure victory," Kane was quoted as saying by FIFA.

Kane stated that England had played according to plan throughout the first half and right up to the early stages of the second half. The high pressing system they implemented successfully disrupted Argentina's game flow, leaving the opposition struggling to build attacking moves.

With this aggressive gameplay, England enjoyed greater ball possession and created a number of dangerous chances before finally opening the scoring.

"At the start of the match we were able to press the opposition effectively. This high pressure allowed us to win back possession faster and take control of the game," Kane explained.

The situation changed completely after the opening goal was scored. Argentina began taking risks by increasing their attacking intensity, while England gradually dropped deeper into defence in an attempt to hold onto their lead.

This shift in momentum left England's backline under sustained pressure. Wave after wave of Argentine attacks eventually resulted in Enzo Fernandez's equaliser, before Lautaro Martinez sealed the Albiceleste's victory during injury time.

"But once we scored that goal, everything changed. Maybe it was because they brought on extra players to push forward, or we could no longer match them in one-on-one duels. They just kept pressing non-stop. We tried to defend and block every attack, but in the end it still was not enough," he added.

This defeat hit Kane particularly hard. He confirmed that every single player had given their absolute best throughout the tournament in the bid to guide England back to a World Cup final.

"We worked incredibly hard just to reach this semi-final. Every player has sacrificed their energy, put in relentless effort, and poured all their emotion into this team. That is exactly why losing in this manner hurts so deeply," he stated.

Despite failing to progress to the showpiece final, Kane still recognised positive development from England's squad over the course of the 2026 World Cup.

England must once again delay their ambition to end their World Cup title drought that has stretched back to 1966. Meanwhile, Argentina will face Spain in the final as they look to defend the trophy they lifted in the 2022 tournament edition.
