Golf Tourism in northern Scotland has shown a significant surge throughout 2025, contributing approximately £60 million to the economy. Latest data from Golf Highland confirms this sport has evolved into a primary economic driver for the region.
The area, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and legendary Golf Courses like Royal Dornoch, Cabot Highlands, and Nairn Golf Club, continues to attract global golfers including those from China. Visitor numbers from the Bamboo Curtain country have notably increased in recent years.
This growth is reflected in green fee revenues exceeding £12 million in 2025 – double the figure from initial 2018 research.

Golf Highland Chairman Neil Hampton views this trend as a strong signal that golf has become the backbone of the local economy, driven by both Domestic Tourists and international visitors.
"The Highlands have attracted growing numbers of golfers annually since the pandemic, benefiting various Businesses through significant spin-off effects. Golf Highland participated in the recent Scottish Golf Tourism Week in Edinburgh, where we were delighted by interest from domestic and international tour operators, including several bringing Chinese golfers," he stated.
Beyond sport, golf's economic impact ripples across supporting sectors. Hampton revealed every £1 spent on golf generates up to fivefold economic impact.
"We estimate each £1 spent on golf delivers £5 in macroeconomic benefits. Based on this calculation, visitors spent over £60 million across the Highlands on transport, food and drink, accommodation, and souvenirs – besides purchasing golf equipment as mementos," he explained.
Notably, this growth extends beyond elite Golf Courses. Community clubs are experiencing increased traffic, including newly popular nine-hole courses.
In 2022, Golf Highland member courses hosted 101,955 visiting golfers. Current figures show a 16% rise to over 120,000, with Spean Bridge and Lochcarron being the newest member clubs.
"It's encouraging to see small community clubs like Bonar Bridge, Ardgay, and Isle of Skye welcoming more golfers. After investing in websites and online booking systems, they've reported green fee revenue increases of 95% and 66% respectively," he noted.
This phenomenon is partly fueled by evolving Tourist Behavior, with travelers seeking diverse experiences that combine iconic courses with affordable alternative routes offering authentic Scottish scenery.
To maintain momentum, Golf Highland actively enhances marketing strategies and inter-club collaboration.
This approach is considered vital for sustaining growth amid global golf destination competition.
"We support member clubs through marketing/finance workshops and encourage photography investments to showcase offerings while boosting social media presence. Neighboring clubs are urged to cooperate rather than compete," he concluded.
With its blend of natural landscapes, rich history, and modern promotion, the Scottish Highlands has become both a Golfer's dream destination and a blueprint for sport as a sustainable economic engine.(agif.asia)
