Indonesia Loses in FIFA Series 2026 Final, Erick Thohir Praises Garuda's Performance

A heartbreaking defeat for Indonesian National Team in the FIFA Series 2026 final still leaves pride. Garuda Squad had to acknowledge Bulgaria's superiority with a 0-1 loss at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium on Monday night, March 30, 2026.
The final result didn't favor them, but Indonesia's playing style became the highlight. Garuda Team appeared courageous, dominated possession, and managed to compete against the more experienced European team.
PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir considered this performance reflected increasingly mature quality.

"I think the gameplay was quite classy. Because we were facing a formidable team that reached the (World Cup) semifinals in 1994," said Erick after the match.
Bulgaria's sole winning goal came from the penalty spot. Marin Petkov's 38th-minute penalty became the difference after a foul in the box changed the match's direction. Otherwise, Indonesia maintained rhythm and didn't lose their playing identity.
More than just the result, this match became a quality test for the team now managed by John Herdman.
After a convincing 4-0 win over Saint Kitts and Nevis, Indonesia now faces the reality of higher competition levels.
For Erick, facing opponents with many Europe-based players actually benefits the learning process.
"Many players compete in Europe, so this is a great opportunity for us to comprehensively upgrade the national team's quality," he stated.
Indonesia's gameplay transformation under Herdman is becoming visible. The playing structure is more organized, ball possession more purposeful, and player confidence has increased.
"As all media witnessed, Coach John Herdman has succeeded thus far in transforming the team, and our gameplay looks quite good," he added.
Off the field, Indonesia also scored positive points as host. The FIFA Series 2026 organization was deemed successful, strengthening Indonesia's global position as an international tournament candidate.
"Hopefully with hosting this FIFA Series, FIFA will give us opportunities for other FIFA tournaments. At least we've tried our best for FIFA and all our guests. Even the Bulgarian President was very pleased with our hospitality," he hoped.
