Mexico has been officially appointed by UN Tourism as the host of the World Congress on Sports Tourism. This moment marks a major step for the country on the global map of Sports Tourism.

Mexico's designation as host represents the event's first expansion outside Europe. Previously, the congress was held in two European countries, Spain and Croatia.

Mexico's appointment sends a strong signal that the country is now firmly on the radar as a new hub for global Sports Tourism development.

With its combination of infrastructure, experience hosting international events, and government strategy, Mexico is positioned as a key player in this industry.

The Minister of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, highlighted the broad impact of the event not only in a sporting context, but also economically and socially.

“Hosting the World Congress is Mexico's opportunity to showcase its greatness to the world, but most importantly, so tourism can translate into well-being for the Mexican people. Sports Tourism not only attracts visitors, generates investment, and boosts our local economy, but also opens opportunities, creates jobs, and strengthens our communities,” she emphasized.

This decision opens strategic opportunities for new investment inflows, an increase in international events, and the strengthening of global networks between the public and private sectors.

Alfonso Zegbe stressed the importance of UN Tourism's role in connecting various sectors.

“UN Tourism is a key international organization that combines country representation with the private sector and associations. It is pioneering because it goes beyond the role of governments: reaching Business stakeholders, organizations, and academics. But most importantly, it generates tangible impact,” he explained.

From the industry side, support came from CONCANACO SERVYTUR. Its President, Octavio de la Torre, sees this year as a crucial moment for Mexico in the eyes of the world.

“In a year that is important for Mexico in the eyes of the world, sports tourism can be a real lever for destination development, local economies, and family businesses,” he said.

The signing of the cooperation agreement with UN Tourism provides the official foundation for hosting the congress.

It is not just an event, but a long-term strategy to strengthen Mexico's position in global Sports Diplomacy.

With this momentum, Mexico is not only preparing to be a host, but also aspiring to become a world leader in sports tourism.(Sectur)
