In the coastal corner of West Kalimantan, Singkawang shines once again as the Cap Go Meh Festival arrives. In 2026, the celebration—synonymous with red lanterns, cultural parades, and Chinese traditions—has become a local economic engine, a stage for Tourism Promotion, and a catalyst for regional development.
Along the city streets, thousands of lanterns hang above a sea of people from various regions. The clinking of traditional music, the vibrant colors of parade costumes, and the aroma of steaming culinary delights from festival tents transform Singkawang into an open cultural stage.
For Singkawang Mayor Tjhai Chui Mie, the momentum of Cap Go Meh is not just a celebration of cultural identity, but a strategy to build the city's image on the national and International Tourism stage. "With support from all parties, Singkawang is optimistic about continuing to grow as a harmonious, progressive, and competitive city at both national and international levels," said Tjhai Chui Mie during the Cap Go Meh celebrations in early March.

This year, the festival's resonance felt even wider with the attendance of several national and international figures. Notable guests included Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, intelligence figure AM Hendropriyono, national figure Oesman Sapta Odang, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Indonesia, Wang Lutong. Their presence underscores the recognition that Singkawang’s Cap Go Meh has evolved into a global Cultural Tourism agenda.
For Tito Karnavian, the experience left a deep impression, particularly regarding the social harmony that forms the foundation of life in Singkawang. "I have been invited to attend the Cap Go Meh Festival in Singkawang four times, but this is the first time I could witness it directly. I am proud to see such a tolerant society," he said. He added that the celebration showcases the face of Indonesia's diversity living within the community's daily life. "This condition reflects the principle of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika—unity in diversity," he remarked.
However, the festival's pulse is felt beyond the cultural parade stage. In the areas of Jalan Sejahtera and Jalan Niaga, culinary tents lined the streets for a Culinary Festival held from February 28 to March 3. The aroma of traditional dishes mingled with the lively chatter of tourists hunting for Singkawang’s signature flavors.
Organizing Committee Chairman Bun Cin Thong explained that the culinary festival serves as a vital platform for local businesses to capitalize on the surge of tourists. "This Culinary Festival presents various Singkawang specialties at affordable prices. The goal is to introduce the region's culinary richness to visitors from out of town and abroad," said Bun Cin Thong.
For the city government, the integration of culture and economy is a strategy to create a Sustainable Tourism ecosystem. The celebration is not merely a spectacle but also opens a space for economic transactions for the community. "Anyone coming to Singkawang need not worry about food. In addition to existing restaurants, culinary centers during the celebration are ready to serve visitors," added Tjhai Chui Mie.
The economic impact of the festival is also significantly felt in the hospitality sector. Ahead of the 2026 Cap Go Meh peak, almost every hotel in the city was packed with tourists. Mokhlis, the Head of the Singkawang City Tourism, Youth, and Sports Office, noted that the local government had prepared 47 hotels to accommodate visitors throughout the series of events.
"The momentum of Cap Go Meh always results in an increase in Tourist Arrivals. This provides a positive effect on the community's economic circulation, from hospitality and culinary sectors to transportation and MSMEs," he said.
Data from recent years shows an upward trend. In 2023, hotel occupancy reached 100 percent. The number of tourist visits jumped from around 300,000 in 2024 to 700,000 in 2025. This year, the city government predicts total visits could surpass one million tourists. This surge serves as a marker of how a Cultural Festival is capable of driving a city's economic wheels.
