Citing Travel+Leisure, Monday, March 9, 2026, an unnamed Virgin Atlantic flight attendant shared tips on the best seat positions for passengers seeking maximum rest during long-haul flights.
Here are some tips to reference when choosing airplane seats to keep the journey comfortable despite long sitting periods.
1. Choose a Seat Near the Airplane Wing
Many travelers don't realize that seat position on a plane can affect the level of shaking felt during turbulence.
Seats around the airplane wing are considered one of the most stable areas in the cabin, as this section is closest to the aircraft's center of gravity.
According to the attendant, passengers seated in this area tend to experience less shaking and vibration during turbulence compared to those seated at the rear.
If wing-area seats are unavailable, the alternative is choosing seats closer to the front of the plane. This position also feels more stable than seats in the back rows.
The closer passengers sit to the front of the aircraft, the less impact turbulence will have.
2. Middle Cabin Seats Can Be Comfortable Spots
For economy class passengers, the most comfortable seat area is usually around five rows from the front of the economy cabin or five rows from the rear.
This position is considered ideal because it's relatively quieter than areas too close to facilities like toilets, galley kitchens, or emergency exits.
Additionally, seats in this area are typically less crowded by passing passengers, making them suitable for travelers wanting to sleep or rest during the flight.
Interestingly, there's another small advantage for passengers sitting here.
The attendant explained that cabin crew usually serve meals from the front and rear simultaneously using service carts. Therefore, passengers seated about five rows from the front of economy class may get their meal choices earlier before some options run out.
3. Emergency Exit Seats Aren't Necessarily Comfortable
Many travelers seek emergency exit seats for their extra legroom, but these positions aren't always the most comfortable.
Despite having more leg space, emergency exit seats tend to be colder than other spots on the plane.
This condition can cause discomfort, especially for those sensitive to cold air during flights.
Moreover, the emergency exit area often becomes a passenger thoroughfare. Many people stand or wait near this area, particularly when queuing for toilets.
This situation can make the surroundings feel busier and less ideal for travelers wanting to rest peacefully.
For frequent long-haul flyers, choosing the right seat can make the flying experience much more comfortable. Before checking in or selecting seats via Airline apps, it's worth carefully considering seat positions.
