Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms 2026 World Cup Will Be His Last, Focuses On Leading Portugal To Reach The Quarter-Finals

Portuguese megastar Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be his final appearance at football's biggest global stage. Nevertheless, the national team captain stressed that his current main focus is to guide Portugal as far as possible in the tournament.

This confirmation was delivered by Ronaldo ahead of the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 match against Spain, scheduled to take place on Monday local time, or early Tuesday morning WIB.

"I want to enjoy this tournament to the fullest, because this will be my last World Cup. But I hope tomorrow will not be my final match at the World Cup," Ronaldo stated, as reported by One Football.

This statement also puts an end to widespread speculation regarding his future at international level. At 41 years old, Ronaldo acknowledges his career has entered its final phase, but reaffirmed his dedication to the Portugal national team will never change.

"I have always given my full commitment to help the national team. Whether I play or not, I will always hold an important role," he added.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner also stressed that the decision to fully retire from professional football is his personal right. According to Ronaldo, discussions about retirement are not a priority while Portugal is still competing in the World Cup.

"There is no point in keep asking about that. What matters most is tomorrow's match," he stated firmly.

Ahead of the clash against Spain, Ronaldo expressed optimism that Portugal have a genuine chance to win the world title. He noted the team's performance has shown consistent positive improvement since the opening phase of the tournament.

"If we did not believe we could win the World Cup, we would not be here. This has been an incredible experience. We keep improving match after match," Ronaldo said.

He explained that consistency is the greatest challenge at a tournament of the World Cup's calibre. Ronaldo noted no team is capable of performing perfectly in every single match, as proven by the number of top-ranked nations that have already been eliminated earlier in the competition.

"We all know this is a competition where it is impossible to play well every single game. This is not easy for anyone. Just look at the teams that have already gone out. I can see this squad remains calm. We have trained well and completed all our preparations properly," he said.

On an individual note, Ronaldo also still has the opportunity to add to his goal tally. As of the Round of 16, he has recorded three goals, and is hoping to find the net again when facing their Iberian rivals.

"Of course there are other players who have scored more, because they have been performing extremely well. We will just have to see if I can get a goal tomorrow," Ronaldo remarked.

Portugal head into the Spain match with positive prior momentum. In their last meeting, the Selecao das Quinas lifted the 2025 UEFA Nations League trophy after beating Spain 5-2 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw in normal time.

In that match, Ronaldo was the pivotal figure, scoring the equaliser that forced extra time before Portugal eventually secured victory via the penalty shootout.
