The bali Provincial Government will launch a simultaneous marine and river clean-up action starting March 1, 2026. The scale of this movement is designed as an integrated effort to preserve the marine ecosystem, protect coastal landscapes, and ensure Bali's reputation as a world-class destination remains intact.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster emphasized that the step is part of the region's strategic policy.

“This aligns with the Bali Provincial Government's strategic program through the Bali Clean Waste Movement in rivers, seas, and beaches across Bali, which will be launched simultaneously on March 1, 2026,” stated Koster.

He explained this initiative isn't standalone, but a follow-up to President Prabowo Subianto's directive during a national coordination meeting.

Bali, as Indonesia's Tourism showcase, receives special attention regarding environmental cleanliness issues.

“This program aims to preserve the marine ecosystem, safeguard beach beauty, and maintain Bali's image among Domestic Tourists and international visitors,” he said.

Coastal cleanliness pressure is evident at popular spots like Kuta Beach, which during west wind season (particularly December-January) frequently experiences overflow of incoming trash. When Tourist Visits peak, this issue severely tests the destination's image.

“Following the President's directive, Bali gets special focus as a global tourism destination, with particular emphasis on waste problems – especially beach litter that could damage Bali's tourism image,” he stated.

The clean-up will target not only beaches but also land, rivers, and lakes.

Local government, military/Police, traditional villages, environmental communities, and the public will join this collective movement.

During the coordination meeting, issues like organizing electrical/telecommunication cables, controlling illegal billboards, traffic management, and monitoring land conversion were also discussed.

All these form part of efforts to maintain Bali's visual and ecological quality as both a living space and destination.

Economically, Bali shows positive trends with 5.82% growth and relatively low poverty/unemployment rates.

However, local authorities stress that such success must be accompanied by strengthened environmental governance to prevent tourism sustainability from being undermined by classic issues like waste.

The Sea and River Clean Movement serves as a reminder that Sustainable Tourism requires not just promotion and infrastructure, but also commitment to nature preservation.
