The prospects of three Serie A clubs in the Champions League 2025/2026 face serious jeopardy. During a painful two-day span, Inter Milan, Juventus, and Atalanta all suffered defeats in their first-leg Round of 16 playoff matches.
These losses significantly diminish Serie A's chances of having representatives in the knockout stages. Compounding the issue, defending Italian League champions Napoli had already been eliminated in the group phase.

Inter became the last Italian team to taste defeat. Visiting Aspmyra Stadion, home of Bodø/Glimt, in the early hours of Thursday, February 19, 2026 (WIB), the Nerazzurri fell 1-3.
Inter showed resilience in the first half with Pio Esposito equalizing at 1-1 after Sondre Brunstad Fet's opener for the hosts.
However, Bodø/Glimt intensified after halftime. Second-half goals from Jens Petter Hauge and Kasper Høgh secured an aggregate advantage for the Norwegian side.
Inter must now win by at least two goals in the second leg to keep their last-16 hopes alive.
Juventus Crushed in Istanbul
Juventus endured an even worse fate a day earlier. At Rams Park Stadium against Galatasaray on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the Old Lady suffered a humiliating 2-5 defeat.
Juventus not only lost but completely lost control of the match, especially after Juan Cuadrado's red card. Their porous defense and sluggish transitions were ruthlessly exploited by Galatasaray.
Facing a three-goal deficit, Juventus requires a near-perfect performance in Turin to overturn the tie.
Atalanta Outplayed in Germany
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund delivered a solid performance against Atalanta in Germany. The Bundesliga representatives secured a valuable 2-0 home advantage for the second leg.
Atalanta struggled to develop their gameplay and created few clear chances throughout the match.
Dortmund's two-goal cushion forces La Dea to produce an extraordinary comeback to keep their Round of 16 dreams alive.
Serie A on the Brink
This series of negative results leaves Italian Football in a precarious position. The three remaining representatives in the Champions League now face immense pressure to overturn deficits in their second legs.
The return fixtures will determine their fate. Failure to recover threatens Serie A with complete elimination before the official commencement of the round of 16.
