Deep regret enveloped Brahim Diaz after the most decisive moment of his international career ended in failure. The Real Madrid forward came under scrutiny following his missed penalty in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Final between Morocco and Senegal.
The high-tension final saw a crucial turning point when Morocco was awarded a penalty. But instead of becoming a hero, Diaz bore the heavy burden after his Panenka kick failed to beat Senegal's Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Through his Instagram account on Monday, January 20, 2026, Brahim Diaz publicly apologized to teammates and all Moroccans. He acknowledged the failure as his personal responsibility and expressed deep devastation over the match's outcome.
“I dreamed of winning this title because of all the love you've shown me - every message, every support that made me feel not alone. I fought with everything I had, with all my heart. Yesterday I failed and I take full responsibility. I apologize from the bottom of my heart,” Diaz wrote.
"This wound won't heal easily, but I will strive to rise again."
Ironically, the final failure contrasted sharply with Diaz's outstanding tournament performance.
The 25-year-old attacker delivered consistently as Morocco's scoring machine, becoming the 2025 AFCON top scorer with five goals.
Diaz nearly scripted a heroic story in the final. He was the central figure when Morocco won a Controversial Penalty after El Hadji Malick Diouf fouled him in the box - a decision that provoked Senegal's outrage.
Fierce protests erupted. Senegal's coach Pape Thiaw even briefly ordered his players to walk off in protest. The match experienced a lengthy delay before resuming.
The penalty was finally taken in the 24th minute of Injury time. Under immense pressure, Diaz opted for a Panenka, but Mendy read it perfectly, denying Morocco's golden opportunity.
That miss became the final's turning point. Senegal later secured victory through Pape Gueye's extra-time goal, claiming their second Africa Cup of Nations title.
The night ended in tears for Diaz. He broke down emotionally while receiving the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer - an individual award rendered hollow without the Champions trophy.
Despite overwhelming regret, Diaz affirmed his determination to rise and redeem this disappointment.
“I will keep moving forward until the day I can repay all this love and become a source of pride for Morocco,” concluded Diaz.
