The 2026 ASEAN Cup Draw presents a serious challenge for the Indonesian National Team. Grouped in Group A, the Garuda squad will face opponents rich in history, rivalry, and pressure, ranging from defending champions Vietnam to classic rivals Singapore.
The group stage draw for the 2026 ASEAN Cup took place at MNC Studio, Jakarta, on Thursday, January 15, 2026. The draw drew attention as it placed Indonesia in the same group as Vietnam, the most consistent team in Southeast Asia over the past decade.
The group draw ceremony was attended by AFF President Khiev Sameth, PSSI Chairman General Erick Thohir, Indonesian National Team Coach John Herdman, and key defender Rizky Ridho. This signals that the tournament is still viewed as prestigious despite being held outside the FIFA calendar.

The draw result placed Indonesia, in Pot 3 alongside Malaysia, into Group A with Cambodia, the winner of the playoff between Timor Leste and Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, and defending champions Vietnam.
The latter name is clearly the toughest test, considering Vietnam is the team that has often thwarted Indonesia's progress in crucial stages of the ASEAN Cup.
Besides Vietnam, Singapore also brings the flavor of classic Southeast Asian rivalry. Matches between these two teams are almost always tight and tense, regardless of the players' status or generation.
Group B is filled with Thailand, the runners-up from the previous edition, alongside Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, and Myanmar.
This power map makes Group A appear "heavier" as it hosts the defending champions and two teams with strong traditions in the regional tournament.
Of all Indonesia's participations in the ASEAN Cup, previously known as the AFF Cup, Indonesia has reached the final six times but has never become champion.
This fact once again places Garuda in the old narrative: always near the trophy, but never truly grasping it.
The challenge for Indonesia is further complicated because the 2026 ASEAN Cup will take place from July 24 to August 26 and does not fall within the FIFA match day period.
This means European clubs strengthened by Indonesian National Team players potentially will not release their players.
This situation opens a new chapter in the era of New Coach John Herdman. The ASEAN Cup also serves as one of the initial tests for Herdman, who stated in his introductory press conference that he would give opportunities to Indonesia's second-tier national players.
With the combination of tough opponents, a non-FIFA schedule, and a transition phase under a new coach, Indonesia's journey in Group A of the 2026 ASEAN Cup is certainly not going to be easy.
However, it is precisely under this pressure that Garuda's chance to break the trophy-less curse is tested once again.
