Persebaya Surabaya is not only preparing to face Malut United as their opponent in week 17 of the BRI Super League 2025/2026. They are also preparing to face the opponent's two most lethal weapons: fast attacking transitions and set-piece strength.

Persebaya coach Bernardo Tavares openly stated that Malut United is one of the most dangerous teams in the league at exploiting moments of changing game situations. In modern Football, transition phases often determine the Match Result. Tavares considers Malut United one of the best in that aspect.

"I agree that they are one of the best teams in the league, in attacking transitions and also very strong in set pieces," said Tavares during the pre-match press conference ahead of week 17 of BRI Super League 2025/2026 at Stadion GBT Surabaya, Friday, January 9, 2026.

According to Tavares, the key for Persebaya is disciplined space management, especially in their own defensive zone. A moment of lapse could turn into a dangerous opportunity, considering Malut United has players capable of shooting quickly from outside the penalty box or delivering precise crosses.

"If we give them too much time and space, they will make the best decision. That's what we must avoid," he said.

The threat from Malut United lies not only in the speed of their transitions but also in the long-established connections between players. Tavares specifically highlighted their frontline, which he assessed as having strong chemistry in executing quick combinations.

"Those three players have a very good connection and easily perform direct combinations," he said.

However, according to the Portuguese coach, Malut United's strength isn't just concentrated on three or four names. Instead, team collectivity is the main factor that makes them consistently troublesome for opponents.

"They are not just three or four players. They play as one team with 11 players," he stated.

From the Persebaya camp, team captain Bruno Moreira acknowledged the opponent's quality but asserted that the home team is not afraid. Playing at home is an important asset to face one of the most stable teams this season.

"We know they have quality players and are not an easy opponent, but we also have a good team here," said Bruno.

Bruno emphasized that mental readiness and confidence are crucial factors for Persebaya to match Malut United's intensity, especially during critical phases of the match.

"We believe in ourselves. We are ready to fight and hope to get a positive result at home," he said.

He also recognized that the full support from the stands of Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium could be the difference in what is predicted to be a tight match. The presence of supporters brings a different energy to the field.
