Manchester United has entered another turbulent phase this season. After sacking Ruben Amorim following the controversy after the match against Leeds United, the Red Devils' management moved quickly to find a short-term solution. An old name has re-emerged: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The former MU manager is reportedly ready to return to Old Trafford to fill the interim manager role. He previously held that position in 2018 before being appointed permanently.
"Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown interest in taking charge of Manchester United as interim coach, regardless of the contract duration," transfer expert Fabrizio Romano wrote via his X account on Tuesday.

The situation at Old Trafford demands quick stability. MU just terminated Ruben Amorim's contract after his controversial statements were deemed to have crossed the line following the 1-1 Draw against Leeds United in the latest round of the 2025/26 Premier League.
According to Solskjaer, Manchester United is taking time to assess the candidates. Darren Fletcher will be the interim coach for this week.
Fletcher Takes Temporary Control
For the immediate match, former MU midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed as interim coach. He will lead Bruno Fernandes and teammates against Burnley on Thursday, January 8, 2026, while the management evaluates both short-term and long-term options.
Fletcher previously managed MU's U-18 team, and this appointment is seen as a transitional solution to keep the dressing room stable amid sudden changes.
Warm Memories Remain
Solskjaer is no stranger to the Old Trafford faithful. He undertook a similar role in December 2018 and successfully revived the team's performance, which subsequently led to his permanent appointment.
During that period, Solskjaer led United to finish sixth, third, and second in the Premier League, before departing in 2021.
Although his tenure ended without major trophies, Solskjaer is still remembered as a figure close to the supporters.
His charisma, understanding of the club's culture, and ability to maintain dressing room harmony are seen as significant assets in the eyes of management and fans.
Amid United's efforts to chase a European Qualification spot this season, Solskjaer's return, even if temporary, could be a pragmatic step to quell the turmoil and maintain the team's competitive direction.
Now, the decision rests with the management. Will Old Trafford welcome back the familiar face who once rekindled hope? Or will MU choose an entirely new direction? One thing is certain, the drama at the Theatre of Dreams won't be ending anytime soon.
