The appointment of John Herdman as the New Coach of the Indonesian National Team opens a new chapter in the journey of national football. It's not just about winning or losing, but about building a strong long-term foundation.

Lalu Hadrian Irfani, Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), requested that Herdman make forming a playing structure, mentality, and regeneration the top priorities in his project with the Garuda squad.

Lalu hopes the PSSI's decision to appoint John Herdman as Indonesian National Team Coach will bring a new, more professional and measurable direction to football achievements.

For this sports-focused legislator, Herdman is tasked not only with devising on-field tactics but also with building team character, discipline, mental strength, and readiness to compete at the international level.

He believes improving the National Team's playing quality must start from disciplined systems, developing a competitive mentality, and a continuous, tiered development process, not through shortcuts.

"We hope he can improve the quality of play, tactical discipline, and the competitive mentality of the players at every match level," he stated in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Regeneration and Development are Key

Beyond performance, Herdman is also urged to maximize the potential of young players and build a healthy regeneration system.

Lalu emphasized the importance of objectivity in Player Selection and expanding talent scouting to the regions.

"Whether towards local players or players at overseas clubs, good cooperation with local clubs, including talent scouting in the regions, must be carried out so the National Team becomes more competitive," he said.

He reminded the public not to pressure the new coach with demands for instant results. According to him, transforming national football requires time, patience, and consistency.

A New Era for the Indonesian National Team

John Herdman was officially appointed by PSSI as coach of the Indonesian National Team. He previously managed the Canadian National Team, leading them to the World Cup. He replaces Patrick Kluivert, who was dismissed on October 24, 2025.

In addition to handling the senior National Team, Herdman also has a mandate to manage the U-23 National Team, an assignment that underscores this project is long-term, not just a quick solution.

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir stated Herdman's appointment marks the starting point of a new era for national football.

"This is the moment when PSSI and Indonesian Football enter a new era, handled by a coach of World Cup Qualification level," said PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir in an official statement on Saturday, January 3, 2026.
